Then, a friend of his father, unable to bear his asceticism, invited him to his father's house, but he spoke extensively about the faults of the household: 'Whether guarding, seeking, or losing, 4-509 whether rich or poor, there is no happiness anywhere, and sin leads to bad destinies. Staying at home does not accomplish the Dharma, and if one acts according to the Dharma, the world declines. Therefore, one should abandon the household and dwell in a place of asceticism.' The Eighteenth Chapter: The Story of Being Born into a Wealthy Royal Family, from 'A Garland of Birth Stories of the Bodhisattva'. When he was born into a Brahmin family, his flawless reputation spread far and wide. He had six brothers who matched his appearance and qualities, and a respectful sister, as well as male and female servants. That Brahmin, skilled in the Vedas, was revered by all people. Later, after some time, his parents passed away. He desired to renounce the world due to grief and suffering. Although his brothers pleaded with him, he had no attachment to household life, so they all renounced together and went to a place of asceticism. There, he lived on lotus roots. Indra, in order to test him, made the lotus roots disappear. He remained in meditation without anger. Indra respectfully revealed his form, taught him the Dharma, and then returned to his abode. Tathagata, Shariputra, Maudgalyayana, Kashyapa, Katyayana, and Ananda, 4-510 were his brothers in that life. His sister was the color of a lotus, and the female servant was Kunza Utara. The Nineteenth Chapter: The Story of the Lotus Root Possessor, from 'A Garland of Birth Stories of the Bodhisattva'. When he became a merchant of the king, he was intelligent, disciplined, and compassionate, having mastered all arts and sciences, and became an object of reverence for people. The mother of his wife asked: 'Is your husband pleased with you because of his merit?' She replied: 'His qualities are so perfect that even monks cannot match them.' She did not say this with certainty, but the old woman took it as true, thinking that he had already renounced the world. The cry of 'He has renounced!' gradually spread throughout the cities. Hearing this news, that great merchant, as if being urged to renounce, firmly requested permission from the king. Despite the dissuasion of relatives and others, he eventually renounced and went to a place of asceticism. He regarded qualities that he did not have as already possessed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Urging proclamation, because Dharma friends are rare, one should adorn oneself with virtues. From 'A Garland of Jataka Tales of Bodhisattvas', the story of the Merchant Prince Jataka, the twentieth. The Twenty-first Jataka, 'Crested Bodhi Jataka', to the Twenty-fifth Jataka, 'Sarabha the Deer Jataka'. When he who was called Crested Bodhi became a great Brahmin, he possessed the best of all virtues and was revered by the king. Among the wise, he was also known as a great scholar. This was due to the power of his previous practice, which made him very skilled. Then he went to the forest for asceticism, and his wife also renounced the world, following him closely, without being forcibly stopped. Later, a king came to the forest for a while, and in order to test the ascetics, he took a beautiful woman to the king's palace. No matter how much the concubines wailed and cried, the ascetic's heart did not waver, let alone be angry. Because he spoke of the great faults of anger, the king became very faithful, promised to be a servant, and sent the concubine back to the ascetic's abode. From 'A Garland of Jataka Tales of Bodhisattvas', the Crested Bodhi Jataka, the twenty-first. In a great lake dwelt a flock of geese, thousands in number. The king of the geese was named Protector of the Land, and his minister was named Good Face. The fame of his beauty and virtues spread throughout the land, and when it reached the ears of King Brahma-given, the king was amazed. In order to see that supreme goose, he decorated the pleasant great lake with various flowers, arranging it like a celestial lotus pond. In order to see that magnificent lake, the king of the geese came with his retinue. The king, desiring to see them, had the birds captured. Protector of the Land was caught in the net, but Good Face was not caught by the net. Seeing him captured, the retinue was greatly amazed. The net was untied, and the merchants offered the king and minister of the geese, placing them on a golden throne. He taught the very profound Dharma, and the king's heart became gentle. Good Face and his retinue lived happily, and again and again proclaimed the Dharma. From 'A Garland of Jataka Tales of Bodhisattvas', the Goose King Jataka. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
