《Collection of Teachings by Ngawang Kunga Sonam》ANK40: 'A Clear Explanation of the Essence of the Thirty-Four Jataka Tales of the Buddha by Master Hero: Few Words, Profound Meaning, Easy to Understand' 'A Clear Explanation of the Essence of the Thirty-Four Jataka Tales of the Buddha by Master Hero: Few Words, Profound Meaning, Easy to Understand' From the Jataka Tale of Offering the Body to a Tigress (First) to the Jataka Tale of Not Being Subdued by a Merchant (Fifth). 'A Clear Explanation of the Essence of the Thirty-Four Jataka Tales of the Buddha by Master Hero: Few Words, Profound Meaning, Easy to Understand' Namo Buddha Bodhisattvaya Homage to the Buddha and Bodhisattvas). Having paid homage to the incomparable King of Sages, Following the well-composed Jataka tales of the Buddha by Master Hero, Here, I write concise and profound words for the benefit of others. The Thus-Gone One, in a previous time, Was born into a high Brahmin family, Perfected in all arts and qualities, Became an object of veneration for all. Once, while wandering in a certain region, He saw a tigress who had just given birth to cubs, Extremely hungry and distressed, Attempting to eat her own offspring. A student named 'Mapama', Searched for food for the tigress, And having found it, gave it to her. Great compassion arose in him thus: 'For the sake of all sentient beings, In order to attain liberation, This body, devoid of essence, I intend to give to the tigress.' Having adorned the Nabza tree, He cast his body before the tigress. The gods rained down flowers, And the great earth, together with the ocean, trembled. Having perfected the supreme Bodhicitta, For the sake of saving another's life, He selflessly gave his body, a treasure of compassion. Homage to the supreme Brahmin. The first chapter, the Jataka Tale of Offering the Body to a Tigress, from 'A Garland of Stories of the Realizations of Bodhisattvas,' is complete. When he was King Shibi, His intelligence was exceedingly pure and stainless, He reached the other shore of all sciences, And became the glory of beings. Since beginningless lifetimes, He was extremely accustomed to giving, In order to alleviate the suffering of beggars, He performed endless acts of generosity. Without attachment even to his own body, His intention to give was very swift. In order to dispel Indra's doubt, He transformed into a blind Brahmin, And begged the king for his two eyes. The king gladly agreed, With a smile, he promised to give his two eyes. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even when urged by the assembly of ministers, he did not abandon his intention. He gradually bestowed both eyes upon the Brahmin, making him sighted. Later, when Indra came again, the king, after uttering words of truth, obtained divine eyes that were even brighter than before. This is the second story in 'A Garland of Jataka Tales of the Bodhisattva,' about being born as King Shibi. When he became the king of Kosala, he uttered secret mantras and possessed great power. He had complete abilities and all the qualities of a king. He possessed perfect wealth, and with the great power of Dharma, he caused even his enemies to abandon their arrogance. The people had great faith in him. Remembering his previous lives, he gave special offerings to ascetics, Brahmins, and the poor. He observed the purification rites at the appropriate times. The landowner clearly stated that the cause of his perfect wealth was the fruit of offering food to the four monks in the past. The particularly excellent queen, possessing great generosity and unobstructed courage, is said to have offered food and drink to the Thubpa (Buddha). Even a small offering to a special object of offering yields great fruit. Realizing this, those around him developed great faith in giving. This is the third story in 'A Garland of Jataka Tales of the Bodhisattva,' about giving a single meal and drink. When he became a great merchant, he was of noble lineage, skilled in arts, wealthy, and of excellent qualities, worthy of being revered by all. With the fame of his bravery in giving, he gave without hesitation, gathering all those who came to beg, and satisfying them all. As he generously gave food with a hundred flavors, he saw a Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha) coming to his doorstep. Because of his great faith in him, he sent his wife to offer food. That wicked woman saw the hellfire being blocked and inquired about the reason. Then, the merchant himself went, joyfully offering food without hesitation. As a result, lotuses grew from the hellfire. Those lotus stamens, born from the power of merit, like demons proud with shame, caused the demons to be ashamed and disappear. He offered food to the Pratyekabuddha, and to make his mind happy, the Pratyekabuddha rose into the sky, displayed miracles, and departed. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
