Chapter Four: The Story of Being Born as a Merchant From 'The Unconquerable': When he became a great merchant, he was generous, humble, disciplined, learned, and wealthy. He continuously gave alms to beggars without any reluctance. To test his wisdom, Śakra (Indra) performed a miracle. Except for ropes and buckets, all substances disappeared. He used ropes and buckets to give alms of roots. Then, Śakra revealed his true form. To dispel his doubts, he said, 'Look at the consequences of your excessive giving, which has depleted your wealth!' But he had no regrets and greatly proclaimed the benefits of giving. Śakra then withdrew his magic and filled his treasuries completely. After that, he generously gave to all beggars whatever they desired, such as grains, wealth, and precious jewels. From the Garland of Jātaka Tales of Bodhisattvas: The story of the birth of the unconquerable merchant, Chapter Five is complete. Chapter Six: The Story of Being Born as a Rabbit, and Chapter Ten: The Story of Performing Sacrifices. When he was born as a rabbit, he had beautiful fur, was pleasing, and possessed virtues. He lived in a monastery abundant with trees, fruits, grass, and greenery. Because he had perfect qualities, the otter, jackal, and monkey respectfully bowed to him and listened to his teachings. When they saw the fourteenth moon, he said, 'Tomorrow is the fifteenth, so you should also take the vows of purification.' They all agreed verbally. The rabbit, who had no possessions, thought, 'I should give my body to beggars.' To awaken this thought in him, Śakra transformed himself into a Brahmin. When he saw the poor and suffering Brahmin, the rabbit knew he should give his body. The otter, jackal, and monkey offered fish, curd, and fruits as alms. The fire transformed by Śakra blazed, but when he threw his body into it, he was not burned. Śakra revealed his true form and escorted him to the heavenly realm. As an example of this wonder, he drew the mark of a rabbit on the moon. From then on, the moon was called 'Rabbit'. From the Garland of Jātaka Tales of Bodhisattvas: The story of the rabbit's birth, Chapter Six is complete. When he was born as the Brahmin Agastya, he learned the Vedas and their branches, and his fame as a scholar spread across the earth. He was respected by all and became very wealthy.

And friends, and all the poor who begged, he satisfied them all with his great wealth. Seeing the faults of household life, he renounced and went through ascetic places in order, and went to the island of Kara. To test the practice of that supreme ascetic, Indra (Śakra) made the leaves and fruits disappear, but his ascetic vows did not waver. He was rich with the wealth of contentment, and Indra was very devoted to him, and after listening to the profound Dharma, Indra returned to his own abode. All the leaves and fruits returned as before. The hundreds of Pratyekabuddhas invited by Indra became objects of offering. The attendants of Indra, the young gods, offered them with abundant food and other offerings. From the Garland of Jataka Tales of Bodhisattvas, the seventh story of the birth of the Brahmin Agastya. When King Maitrībala became king, he possessed generosity, taming, and compassion. Punishment and benefit were not contrary to the Dharma. That place was free from harm, always full of joy and abundance. Happy and prosperous politics flourished everywhere. At that time, the five Yakshas who stole the splendor, who were expelled by the king, could not steal the splendor in that place, so they went to the abode of the cowherd. They asked the reason and learned that it was due to the merit of the king. They transformed into Brahmins and accepted alms, and were given abundant food. After that, the Yakshas revealed their true forms and said that they needed human flesh and blood. With great compassion, the king released blood from the five veins of his body, satisfying the Yakshas. After that, the Yakshas felt remorse and offered repentance, begging the king to forgive and accept them. At this time, Indra came and healed the king's body with medicine. The five Yakshas who were accepted became the Five Hundred Buddhas of the Auspicious Aeon. From the Garland of Jataka Tales of Bodhisattvas, the eighth story of the birth of King Maitrībala. King Sarvaṃjaya was born in Śibi, and his son Sarvatrāṇa was appointed as regent. He was learned and possessed all virtues, and was very brave in giving, freeing the suffering of begging from people gathered from all directions. At that time, the enemies... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
