The Twenty-second Chapter: The Birth as a Wandering Ascetic Among the wandering ascetics, when he became known as 'Bodhi,' he was skilled in arts and sciences, and became an object of reverence for all. To benefit sentient beings, he gradually traveled through cities, approaching a king, who revered him for a long time. However, those with evil intentions, unable to tolerate these wonders, used deceitful schemes to diminish the king's reverence, and Bodhi went to a place of ascetic practice. Having attained the five superknowledges, to turn the king and his retinue away from wrong views, he manifested as a monkey, wearing a monkey skin. Some said there was no cause, some said Ishvara (梵文:Īśvara,天城体:ईश्वर,罗马音:Ishvara,字面意思:自在天) was the cause, some said karma was the cause, and some held annihilationism. The king adhered to these evil religions. Bodhi eradicated these wrong views and established the king and his retinue in virtue. Like a king of geese soaring in the sky, he returned to his abode. From the Garland of Jataka Tales of Bodhisattva, the Twenty-third Chapter: The Birth of the Great Bodhi. On the slopes of the glorious snow mountain, in that very delightful forest, the great Bodhisattva became the king of monkeys. A lost man came there, wanting to pick Tinduka fruits, but unfortunately fell into a cliff. In that cliff, difficult to traverse from all directions, the Bodhisattva carried him and safely rescued him. The exhausted monkey entrusted the man to protect him from harm. When the Bodhisattva fell asleep, the man, wanting to eat meat, began to murder him. Although the monkey was slightly injured, he was full of compassion, without anger, and instead preached the Dharma to him, and escorted him to the edge of the village. That extremely sinful man, afflicted with leprosy, wandering in the wilderness, was seen by the king who came to the forest. The man confessed his sins, 'Please regard this disease as insignificant as a flower, please regard me as an enemy, without compassion.' From the Garland of Jataka Tales of Bodhisattva, the Twenty-fourth Chapter: The Birth of the Great Monkey. In a very secluded forest, in a place of perfect abundance, the great Bodhisattva was born as a Sharabha. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
