Furthermore, to make it tranquil, to make it focused, to make it equally abide. Thus it is said. Here, to settle the mind means to focus the mind single-pointedly on the clear appearance in the field of consciousness of the deity's form, face, hands, mudras, ornaments, and so on. To abide continuously means to abide in a continuous stream, without the mind straying to anything other than that object of focus. To abide repeatedly means that if the mind wanders to something else after having been settled in that way, one should immediately recognize this and not allow it to fall under the sway of discursive thoughts, but rather settle it completely on the previous object of focus. To abide closely means that after having pacified distraction in that way, one should gather the mind single-pointedly on the extremely clear object of focus and cause it to go higher and higher. To tame means that when the mind becomes discouraged and loses faith in samadhi due to despondency and so on, one should generate enthusiasm for the qualities of samadhi, such as the divine eye, clairvoyance, and magical powers, and for the temporary and ultimate fruits, and then settle the mind on the object of focus. To pacify means that when the mind becomes agitated by desirable objects, pleasing sights and sounds, and memories of past amusements, laughter, and enjoyment, and the mind does not settle on the object of focus, one should recognize the faults of distraction and pacify the agitation by recalling the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. To completely pacify means that if sleepiness, drowsiness, attachment, mental pleasure, and so on arise in addition to that, one should eliminate them with antidotes and abide as before. To make it focused means that by accomplishing the abiding of the mind through many efforts in that way, one attains the state where it spontaneously engages single-pointedly without straying to anything other than that object of focus. To make it equally abide means that when one has attained equanimity of mind, free from sinking and agitation, one should relax the effort and abide in equanimity. From this, the ninth stage of mind abiding is accomplished, which is the single-pointedness of desire, and when the bliss of physical and mental pliancy arises on top of that, it is established that one has attained shamatha characterized by being included in the proximity of the first dhyana. When cultivating such mind abiding, there are five faults that obstruct all samadhis, and in order to counteract these faults, one must rely on eight activities of abandonment. As the Madhyantavibhaga says: Five faults, eight activities of abandonment.

It arises from dependent causes. Laziness and instructions, forgetting, sinking and agitation, non-application and application, these are considered the five faults. The place and abiding in that place, the cause and the nature of the result. Not forgetting the object, sinking and agitation, abandoning them, applying effort, and abiding peacefully when calm. As it is said. The five faults are: laziness, forgetting instructions, sinking and agitation, non-exertion, and exertion. The antidotes to these are the eight applications of abandonment, in order. During the application, laziness is a fault, and its antidote is to abide, becoming the basis of samadhi, which is diligence, and what causes one to abide in it is desire, and its cause is faith, and the result of diligence is pliancy, these are the four. First, faith, which is manifest belief in the qualities of samadhi, should be generated in one's mind through scripture, reasoning, stories, and so on. Once faith has arisen, a strong desire to accomplish that purpose will arise. If there is desire, one will quickly enter into the practice of samadhi, and without the appearance of hardship, one will exert diligence with the force of joy. One who possesses diligence will be free from the adverse conditions of heaviness of body and unworkability of mind, and will obtain pliancy, which allows one to use the object as desired, thereby defeating the thief of laziness. Then, when entering samadhi, forgetting the object is a fault, and its antidote is to hold in mind the instructions on what the root object is and how to cultivate it, so as not to forget it. When abiding in the state of equipoise, not recognizing the arising of sinking and agitation is a fault. Its antidote is to constantly be alert with the whip of mindfulness, recognizing and preventing the arising of sinking and agitation. When either sinking or agitation has arisen, not abandoning them is a fault, and its antidote is to apply effort to make the mind become discouraged or clear. When the mind is workable after being free from sinking and agitation, strong exertion, such as affirming or negating faults and qualities
