The fault is that, as an antidote, tightness and looseness should be adjusted to be moderate. In this way, by making the object of focus clear and intense with short and frequent sessions, one should become skilled in the methods of taming the mind. These nine stages of mind-abiding are accomplished sequentially through the six powers: the first stage of mind-abiding is accomplished through the power of hearing; the second stage of mind-abiding is accomplished through the power of thinking; the third and fourth stages of mind-abiding are accomplished through the power of mindfulness; the fifth and sixth stages of mind-abiding are accomplished through the power of vigilance; the seventh and eighth stages of mind-abiding are accomplished through the power of effort; the ninth stage of mind-abiding is accomplished through familiarity, that is, through the power of habituation. There is also a way to accomplish it through the four types of attention: in the case of the first two stages of mind-abiding, since dullness and agitation are predominant, one needs the attention of applying exertion. From the third to the seventh stage, the strength of concentration and dullness/agitation are similar, so there is the attention of intermittent application. In the eighth stage, concentration has become a power, so there is the attention of uninterrupted application. In the ninth stage, it arises spontaneously as desired, so there is the attention of application without effort. At that time, five experiences arise: in the first stage of mind-abiding, the experience of recognizing the thought that discursive thoughts have increased arises; in the second stage of mind-abiding, the experience of the rest of discursive thoughts arises, where discursive thoughts sometimes subside and sometimes arise; from the third to the seventh stage of mind-abiding, one follows whether the mind abides or not, whether there are obstacles or not, so the experience of the exhaustion of discursive thoughts arises; in the eighth stage of mind-abiding, from the moment one thinks the mind does not abide, it disappears on its own due to the power of the antidote, so the experience of the formation of discursive thoughts arises; in the ninth stage of mind-abiding, the experience of the non-manifestation of the formation of discursive thoughts arises, where concentration arises naturally without being disturbed by conditions. These are also called the five experiences of moving, obtaining, habituating, stabilizing, and perfecting: the experience of moving is like a stream flowing down a steep mountain; the experience of obtaining is like water flowing from a narrow hole; the experience of habituating is like the slow flow of a great river; the experience of stabilizing is like a still ocean or a mountain; the experience of perfecting is like an ocean without waves or a lamp unmoved by the wind. As it is also said in the Lamrim: Moving, obtaining, habituating, stabilizing, perfecting.

It will be completely fulfilled. If someone dwells in steep water, completely attached to the steps of a potter, the non-dwelling traveler will become weary. At that time, like a fire burning on the head, there is a little, but those are few. At that time, slowly extend the exhalation and inhalation. In order to get used to that, etc., first take equanimity. Like a mountain, unmoving, do not force yourself to do it alone. By abandoning the taste, that is finally completed. Seeing the manifestation of power, there is no joy or sorrow. Thus it is said. Three or five deities appear, slightly moving. Obstacles arise, this is the first. That clear meditation's foundation has three parts. Clear and unmoving, this is the second part. The power of solitary meditation, this is the third part. That day, the conditions do not change, this is the fourth part, where does the difference lie. Extremely unseizable, this is the fifth part. Thus it is said. Like that, through many efforts, in the generation stage, focusing the mind single-pointedly, what is known as the fault of change also comes from that. Especially blurry, dim, shadowy, the measurement of the object has measure and manner, number and posture, color and shape, only the color gradually disappears. When it changes like that, be aware, do not be moved by the winds of fabrication. Thus it is said, do not follow after those faults of conceptual thought, but learn to make the fundamental object appear in the way that you yourself want it to appear. Like that, gradually becoming accustomed, at first the deity appears but is completely unclear, but later it becomes clearer and clearer, and finally it becomes clear as if it could be seen with the eyes. Just as it is said in that very text: like mirages, smoke, fireflies, meteors, combined with the manner of lamps and the sun. Thus it is. Through that manner, focus well on the main one, and focus the mind on the deity of the body mandala. Then gradually also learn the visualization of the retinue, and finally make the entire mandala appear in the mind simultaneously without before or after. The order of perfecting the inner power of samadhi is, the appearance of the deity like a reflection of the moon in water, the prophecies of heroes and yoginis, the arising of clairvoyance, dreaming of wondrous omens, etc., countless appearances of path signs will arise, but, abandon joy and sorrow and holding them as supreme, in the expanse of great equality of awareness and emptiness, severing hope and fear into the realm of reality, this is the pith instruction. Like that, through various methods, stabilize the yoga of union.
