The Extremely Hot Hell is where one is burned in a boiling iron pot, and when bubbles rise, flesh grows again, and when one sinks, the bones are burned, and all the inside and outside, such as the lungs and heart, are burned by fire. Molten copper juice is poured in, and the body is burned to ashes. The Avici Hell is where the earth turns into burning flames, and the body is burned like a candle, and just hearing the sound of suffering, one cannot distinguish between the flames and the beings, and the suffering of grinding like flour is unbearable. If one escapes from these hells, running in four directions, one will fall into a burning ash pit, up to the knees, and when one steps on it, one will be burned, and when one lifts it, one will recover. After escaping from there, one will fall into a swamp of rotten corpses, and be gnawed by worms like iron and copper needles. Even if one escapes from there, on the plain of weapons, one will be pierced when one steps on it, and one will revive when one lifts it, and falling leaves will turn into swords, and then be cut down. On the iron thorn tree, climbing up and down, one becomes exhausted and is eaten by birds and dogs. After escaping from there, one runs to the riverbank because of thirst, but it is a river of ashes.

Falling into the Avīci hell, one is tormented by the burning of flesh, bones, and marrow. The lifespan from the Sañjīva hell up to the six hot hells is such that the lifespan of the desire gods, such as the Four Great Kings and the six desire gods, is calculated with fifty human years as one day, and their own lifespan increases in multiples from five hundred to sixteen thousand years. The Atapa hell can endure for half an intermediate kalpa, and the Avīci hell can endure for one intermediate kalpa. In short, the fire of the Sañjīva hell is hotter than the fire at the end of a kalpa, and each lower level is four times hotter than the one above, making it unbearable. The abodes of the cold hells are in darkness where there is no difference in appearance, amidst snow and ice, blizzards, ice caves, ice pits, and great icy ravines, threatened by the cold. They utter trembling, unpleasant sounds like "Achu," and cry out in agony, "Kyihud." Their teeth chatter, and they cannot speak. The touch of the cold causes blisters the size of peas to cover their bodies. Because of the cold, the blisters burst and become sores. Because it is extremely cold, their bodies split into four pieces like a lotus. The wounds from the splits turn inside out, and the fine blood vessels connecting them split like উৎপལ་ flowers. Because of the cold, their bodies split into a hundred or a thousand pieces, turning inside out and scattering into fragments, splitting like a great lotus, and the suffering is unbearable. Regarding lifespan, the Treasury of Knowledge says: "Like extracting sesame seeds for a hundred years, extracting one sesame seed, when the sesame seeds are exhausted, that is the lifespan of the blister hell; the lifespan of the others is twenty times that." This is the tradition of mentioning the blister hell first. The suffering of the second realm of the lower realms, the pretas, is also unimaginable. Those with external obscurations are tormented by hunger and thirst, running in all directions. They cannot find or see any food or drink. Even if they see it, it is guarded by the messengers of Yama, and they have no power to use it. Just by looking at it, even great rivers dry up, turning into grayish-white sandy ground. Medicinal trees and forests turn into piles of coal and charred wood. Pleasant places become unpleasant.
