As soon as they arrive there, they turn into flames, their entire insides are burned to ashes, and flames and smoke billow from their mouths, noses, stomachs, and so on. The common obscuration is: having not tasted food or drink, their entire bodies are dry, their intestines are stuck to their spines, their hair is tangled in a mess, their throats are like bowstrings, their limbs are like reeds, and tormented by heat and cold, their color is bluish and blackish. Even if they find a little food, their mouths are only the size of a needle's eye, and their throats are as thin as a horse's tail, so it doesn't go in at first. When it reaches the abdomen, the belly is as large as a country, so it cannot be filled. Some lick their mouths, but there is no place for the food to enter the abdomen, and the poison in their mouths dries up the rivers, so they are always unable to bear the suffering of hunger and thirst. As it says in the *Encouragement to Take Up the Spirit of Enlightenment*: "The mouth of a needle's eye is fearful, immeasurable yojanas are terrifying, a huge belly can drink the water of the great ocean, but the thin throat cannot pass through, the saliva in the mouth has the power of poison, even if it encounters moisture, it will dry up." It is said that the lifespan can last up to fifteen thousand years. The third lower realm is the suffering of animals. In general, those who live there, the big eat the small, the small pierce the big, many gather together to eat one, and one eats many. The nagas are burned by gravel every day and are threatened by garudas. The scattered birds, wild animals, livestock, sheep, etc. that are on the ground, in the mountains, and in the rivers also eat each other, harm each other, and are slaughtered by people for their meat, skin, and bones. Furthermore, there are the sufferings of being made to carry unbearable loads, plowing, milking, picking wool, shearing wool, driving, beating, and other forms of exploitation, as well as the common sufferings of stupidity and muteness, which are unimaginable. The lifespan is not fixed, and some of the longest-lived ones suffer for kalpas. Moreover, we have been born in these three lower realms many times in the past, and there is no suffering that we have not experienced. Even now, because the evil deeds of the past are still in our minds, and because we cannot let go of this life, we have done everything that should not be done for the sake of this life, so in the future, we will only fall.

Since what is experienced is only suffering, if even a little heat, cold, hunger, and thirst of a single day cannot be endured now, then can those sufferings of the lower realms, such as the heat and cold of hell, the hunger and thirst of the pretas, the servitude of animals, which are prolonged and unbearable, be endured? One should think intensely in this way. Furthermore, if one is born in a good realm through virtuous actions, is that enough just because there is the enjoyment of the happiness of the heavens? If one thinks like that, then just as anything, whether a large or small fire, is burned, wherever one is born in samsara, high or low, it is of the nature of suffering. The three lower realms are suffering upon suffering, unbearable like a pit of fire. Moreover, there is no happiness even in the heavens. For example, in the human realm, everyone, great or small, has their own suffering that is proportionate to their size. In particular, the common sufferings include the suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, as well as poverty, decline, separation, beatings, killings, and so on, which are inconceivable. The asuras also constantly quarrel and fight with each other due to jealousy of others' prosperity, resulting in injuries, mutilation, killings, defeats in battle, and so on, leading to immeasurable suffering of conflict. The gods of the desire realm are also intoxicated and heedless due to desire, and they must experience the suffering of death and falling, like a fish thrown on hot sand, for seven divine days, and there is also the suffering of conflict and so on. In the two upper realms, there is no immediate torment of intense suffering, but there is the suffering of change. Just as a bird that flies into the sky must eventually fall to the ground, when the force of contaminated happiness is exhausted, one falls back into the lower realms and must experience intense suffering. As it says in the 'Letter to a Friend': 'Having obtained the great happiness of the desire realm of the gods, and the happiness of detachment of Brahma, one becomes firewood for the fire of Avici again, relying on непрерывный страдание.' Therefore, those who are attached to the happiness of samsara are like moths that are burned by flying towards the light of a lamp, wild animals that are killed by listening to the sound of a flute, bees that are stuck or closed in and die by sucking nectar from flowers, fish that are lured and killed by the taste of food on the tip of a hook, and oxen
