One should contemplate and cultivate intense compassion. Third, contemplate the causes and effects, what to abandon and adopt, the faults of samsara, and the benefits of liberation. As stated in the sutras: "The actions of sentient beings, even after hundreds of kalpas, will not be lost. When they gather and the time is ripe, they will surely ripen into fruit." Therefore, just as fruits ripen differently from sweet or bitter seeds, the causes of happiness and suffering are the two types of actions: virtuous and non-virtuous. Those who desire liberation must correctly adopt and abandon. As the great teacher said: "What is the use of happiness in this life from sins that cause suffering in many lifetimes? This life is short, only a few years, but the next life is boundless. In order not to suffer in the next life, adopt and abandon virtue and non-virtue as a means to attain happiness." It is divided into four points: the distinction between virtue and non-virtue, the boundary, the weight, and the result. First, in terms of distinction, virtue has ten aspects depending on how to abandon what should be abandoned: protecting the lives of sentient beings, giving without attachment, abiding in celibacy, these are the three actions of the body; speaking truthfully, speaking gently, reconciling discord, praising the virtues of others, these are the four actions of speech; being content, loving others, believing in karma and its effects, these are the three actions of the mind. Also, there are ten aspects depending on how to learn what should be learned. As stated in the Madhyantavibhāga: "Writing, offering, giving, listening, reading, memorizing, explaining, instructing, thinking, and meditating, the nature of these ten actions is an immeasurable accumulation of merit." Thus. Depending on how to encourage the common continuum, there are the ten perfections such as generosity. Such virtues, even the smallest ones, should not be despised but should be accepted, because accumulating small virtues will eventually become great virtues, just as drops of water gradually fill a vase. As stated in the Compendium: "Just as drops of water gradually fill a vase, from the beginning to the end, gradually filling it with small amounts of water. Similarly, the initial aspiration is also the cause of enlightenment, gradually perfecting the qualities of white dharma, and will eventually become a Buddha." Similarly, non-virtue, which is the opposite of virtue, from the perspective of the doer, includes the three aspects of body, speech, and mind.
