Alas, having obtained this human body, although it seems to be merely a fortunate coincidence relying on the power of past virtues, without Dharma, one must quickly go to that great place of suffering, which is regrettable. What kind of method is good to avoid falling into that place? Ah, I am afraid! While thinking this, he loudly uttered these words: Alas, I am so afraid! Is it because there are too many beings in the lower realms? Or is it because obtaining a human body is too difficult? Or is it because the speed of falling into that place is too fast? It is difficult to obtain and easy to destroy. How can one be liberated from this? If there is a method, I will practice it! As he lamented in this way, from the sky above, the kind root guru appeared, adorned with the six bone ornaments on his body, with his two hands in the gesture of granting refuge, and one should meditate that he spoke these words: Alas! The difficult-to-obtain leisure and opportunity is only obtained this time! Soon, one is about to fall into the state of evil destinies! If one does not accomplish great things this time, it will be very difficult to obtain a human body later! As soon as he said this, he thought in his mind: Now I must liberate myself from the suffering of samsara, and I will liberate all sentient beings without exception! As soon as he generated such a mind of enlightenment, a ray of light shot from the guru's heart and pierced my heart, and I felt that I had suddenly arrived in the realm of great bliss. Then, immeasurable rays of light emanated from my heart, leading all those sentient beings to the state of great bliss without exception. Thinking in this way, one should cultivate strong compassion for sentient beings. Second, contemplating the impermanence of life: For the method of taking the essence of the precious leisure and opportunity that is difficult to obtain, one should not delay or postpone like a snake in the lap of a coward or a fire on the head of a flirtatious woman, but should immediately engage in meaningful activities. The reason is that although we have now obtained this difficult-to-obtain body, we will not stay for long, but are certain to die. Because since birth, we have not seen or heard of any sentient being who has survived without dying, and it is impossible to even have a doubtful thought about whether such a possibility exists. As Ashvagosha said: On earth or in heaven, who is born and does not die? Have you seen or heard of it, or do you have doubts about it?

Therefore, one must certainly die. In the discourse on impermanence, it says: Like a pond with diminishing water, with no addition but only decrease, since all are on the path to death, who can trust this sudden life? Life has no additional increase, only decrease, so one dies quickly. Like a pond with diminishing water and a cracked bottom, life is exhausted; like the shadow of the setting sun, life decreases; like a granary filled with grain, life is depleted. Just as each step taken by an animal led to the slaughterhouse brings it closer to death with each passing year, month, day, and morning and evening, yet one does not realize this, which is truly foolish. Moreover, the thought that one will not die even tonight is untenable. As stated in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: 'Thinking that one will not die today, and living comfortably, is unwise.' In general, the end of birth is death, the end of gathering is dispersal, the end of accumulation is depletion, and the end of height is falling; one does not transcend these four laws. This is because one has not thought about these things before. If one thinks about them, one will realize that one's body, like a water bubble, is certainly of a nature to perish. The external world, including Mount Meru, initially forms, exists in the middle, and is ultimately destroyed by the three elements of fire, water, and wind. The changes of the four seasons, the patterns of the rising and setting of the sun and moon, the differences between moments, and sentient beings, from the great Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas, to the gross Brahma, Indra, great kings, and the subtle beings of the three realms, all must certainly die. In short, once one has taken a body composed of the four elements, the conditions for survival are rarer than the stars in the daytime, while the conditions for death, in the degenerate age of the five defilements, such as diseases, evil spirits, and calamities, are more numerous than the dust on the earth. One does not know where or when one will die, so it is impermanent. Furthermore, one's illusory body is also impermanent, composed of impure substances, formed from the four elements, a fragile body like a bursting bubble. Even if one has accumulated merit from the past, it can only form such a body, so it will quickly become impermanent. At that time, the *Manjushri Namasangiti* says: 'Parents are not your protectors, nor are friends and relatives. They will abandon you, and you will go alone to the next life.' Therefore, the castles one has built, the accumulated
