Generate the thought of wanting to practice. Visualize the Lama on the crown of your head, with immeasurable devotion, pray to the all-encompassing Gyalwa, the venerable Lama, remember me. Please bless me to be completely liberated from samsara. And so on, pray sincerely from the depths of your heart according to your wishes. These are practiced as a way to lead at the beginning of each meditation session, as a custom. Among these, the first is to contemplate the difficulty of obtaining a human body. That is, being separated from the eight unfavorable conditions, possessing the eight freedoms and the ten endowments. The eight unfavorable conditions are: the three lower realms of hell, hungry ghosts, and animals, long-lived gods, even if born as a human, being born in a borderland, barbarians, having incomplete faculties, and wrong views, these eight are unfavorable for practicing Dharma. Considering this, one possesses the ten virtuous qualities, that is, obtaining a human body that encounters the Buddha's teachings, being born in a central region where the Dharma flourishes, having no defects in the five senses, not following perverse views such as those of non-Buddhists, having faith in the Three Jewels, these are the five self-endowments. And the Buddha appeared in the world, he taught the Dharma, the Dharma abides, there are practitioners who follow the Dharma, there are also spiritual friends who teach the Dharma, patrons provide favorable conditions with loving hearts, these are the five other-endowments. Therefore, this precious human body that has the leisure to practice Dharma is very difficult to obtain. As it is said: Having faith and great devotion, having pure perception and little bias, having great compassion and good wisdom, having diligence and high spirit, having little miserliness and a gentle disposition, being without attachment and pure vows, this is a perfect being with qualities, otherwise the supreme Dharma cannot be accomplished. Borderlands, barbarian lands, having incomplete faculties and wrong views, being controlled by others and having little faith, having no devotion and great sectarianism, being attached to this life and lazy, having great miserliness and little compassion, having dull wisdom and a rough mind, this is a body far from the Dharma, there is never an opportunity for liberation. Therefore, examine the vessel of the fortunate ones, and skillfully teach this supreme Dharma. As it is said, a human body that possesses faultless qualities is difficult to obtain in terms of example, number, and time. First, from the perspective of example

There are three difficulties in obtaining: like a wish-fulfilling jewel, or an udumbara flower, or scattering beans on a very smooth slate. A wish-fulfilling jewel is very difficult to appear; if the methods, conditions, instruments, and powerful aspirations of the past are not complete, it is like not having the opportunity to obtain the jewel. A precious human body is also obtained by those who have accumulated merit and purified obscurations from many eons ago; it is difficult for those who are not to obtain it. The udumbara flower does not grow in just any place; even if it does grow, unless the lion of men, the chief of the two-legged, comes into the world, there is no opportunity for it to grow. A human body with leisure and endowment is difficult for any being to obtain; it must come from the result of practicing the Dharma correctly, so it is difficult to obtain. On a very smooth slate, even if you scatter thousands of beans, it is impossible for even one to stick; even if one does stick, it is even more difficult to obtain a human body than that. Second, it is difficult to obtain from the perspective of number: a very large pile of grain, the root of which is the other six realms, and the top is an analogy for the bodies of gods and humans, so it is difficult to obtain. Furthermore, in the summer, look at how many insects and bees there are in the sky and on the ground, and how many there are even in just one puddle; in general, there are many who are just similar to human bodies and who are like human bodies, and among these, the precious human body that can practice the Dharma properly is very rare, so it is difficult to obtain. Third, it is difficult to obtain from the perspective of time: not being born in a dark age, an empty age, an age when the Buddha comes but does not teach the Dharma, or a place where the Dharma is taught but there are no suitable vessels, but obtaining a human body at a time when the teacher has come, the Dharma is taught, and the teachings abide, this is difficult to obtain. In particular, the emanations of the noble Buddha, also the emanations who come to the human world who can speak and understand, these are the supreme emanations, able to accomplish the benefit of all beings, and able to teach the corresponding Dharma wheel in their respective languages, those who manifest emanations in the realms of the other six beings
