Abandon all associating relatives, etc., and like pulling a hair from butter, be alone. Since it is uncertain when one will go to the next world, focus your mind on this fleeting life like the setting sun in the clouds. Shouldn't you practice a Dharma that fulfills the wishes of all lifetimes? You should strongly think, "I am going to die," because the Lord of Death will not wait. Practice the supreme Dharma, and strive from today onwards. As it says, "The Lord of Death will not wait, practice the supreme Dharma, and strive from today onwards." The Great Teacher said, "Half of a short life is spent in the sleep of ignorance, and two-thirds of the other half is spent in scattered distractions and busyness. Even the remaining one-third is often controlled by obstacles and circumstances. Therefore, actions are as fleeting as autumn clouds, life is as unstable as lightning in the sky, and karma follows like a shadow. Even a body full of youth quickly decays. At that time, it is most important to strive for beneficial methods." Therefore, from the depths of your heart, even from your bones, generate fear of the impermanence of death, and strive to spend your entire life in Dharma. Again, with the body posture as before, or in the lotus position, visualize: yourself, not knowing where you came from, going to a valley facing north. The color is black, the empty walls are bright red, and there is no traffic of people. Green mountains are piled up like stacks, and green and blue mountain streams flow gently. The ravines are crisscrossed, and the reeds are gray and sparse. Many corpses are dragged back and forth by wild animals, a vixen cries mournfully, crows caw in flocks, and owls hoot terrifyingly. Towering cliffs, and the wind howls. The sun is setting on the mountaintop, arriving at a place of dark shadows. Never having gone there before, without friends, without support, bewildered. "Alas, how pitiful, where should I go? I have no support. Where are my children and possessions? When will I reach my homeland and parents? Alas, how pitiful, I am so pitiful!" Crying out loudly, walking aimlessly. Suddenly, falling into a ravine in a cliff. Waving your arms, you grab a clump of grass in the middle of the cliff, holding on tightly, trembling all over. Looking down, it is bottomless; looking up, it reaches the sky, smooth as a mirror, vast and boundless, and the wind howls.

It is said that in a certain place, from a crack in the rock on the right side of that pile of grass, a white mouse emerged, bit off a blade of grass, and carried it away. From the left side, a black mouse emerged, bit off a blade of grass, and carried it away. The two mice took turns biting off blades of grass and carrying them away, so the pile of grass became smaller and smaller. There was no way to resist the mice, and death was frightening. Trembling with fear, it thought: Alas! Now death is coming upon me. There is no place where my calls are heard. Because I never thought of death before, I have no Dharma. Death comes suddenly, unexpectedly. Now I must part from my children, wealth, relatives, countrymen, neighbors, and from this day forward, I will never meet them again. I did not do good deeds before, and the wealth I accumulated is left behind. I must go alone and without a friend to the dark and distant land of the dead, which I have never been to before. Alas, how frightening! What is the best way to escape from this? Where to go? What to do? Alas! How can I escape from this? As it was lamenting loudly, in the sky above, the kind root guru himself, seated on a lotus and moon disc, adorned with the six bone ornaments, holding a hand drum and bell, came dancing gracefully and said: Alas! Now impermanence is quickly approaching. The four seasons of the outside world are impermanent and changing. The old, the young, enemies, and friends, all will die and be destroyed. The young, the mature, years, months, and days are changing. There is nothing that can stop death. Is there any way to stop it? Look at this now! Now there is no time, develop devotion to the guru. Hearing these words, it thought: Alas! If I had not encountered such a death, I should have practiced the Dharma. I regret that I did not practice the Dharma before. Now, whether I live or die, the guru and the Three Jewels know. If the guru and the Three Jewels have compassion, how wonderful it would be if they could save me from this great precipice of samsara. Thinking this, from the depths of its heart, it developed strong devotion and reverence. At that very moment, a ray of light shot from the guru's heart and pierced into my body, and at the same time, the pile of grass broke. I was easily lifted up by that ray of light and arrived in the Pure Land of Great Bliss. At the same time, immeasurable rays of light emanated from my heart, leading all sentient beings of the three realms to the Pure Land of Great Bliss.
