Wishing to attain the ultimate Dharmakaya in one's own continuum is refuge of the result. Until that is attained, one requests the Buddha, who has already appeared in the continuum of others, to be the teacher who shows the path that saves from fear; one requests the Dharma, taught by him, to be the path to travel without fear; one requests the Sangha to act as the companion who liberates from fear. Therefore, making the cause for the accomplishment of the Three Jewels in one's own continuum is refuge of the cause. Temporarily, all three jewels are regarded as supports, but ultimately, only the Dharmakaya of the Buddha. Besides the Rupakaya and the Dharma of the Buddha's realization, the Dharma of realization included in the continuum of Bodhisattvas and Pratyekabuddhas can also be enhanced, but because it is impermanent, it is deceptive; the Dharma of scripture must be abandoned when the truth is seen; and those Sanghas also have gross obscurations and latent fears, so they must rely on the Buddha. As stated in the Uttaratantra, "Because of abandoning, because of being deceptive dharmas, because of being non-existent, and because of being accompanied by fear, the two dharmas and the assembly of noble ones are not permanent places of refuge." So, what is the refuge? It says in that same text, "Refuge is only the Buddha, because the Thubpa (Shakyamuni) possesses the Dharmakaya, and the Sangha is also the ultimate of that." Secret mantra practitioners believe that their own mind naturally abides in the nature of the Buddha. In order to manifest this, they take refuge in the common external Three Jewels, and also place the uncommon mind evenly in the state of primordial unorigination. That is to say, they regard the general teachings and the Three Jewels of each mandala as the place of refuge of the cause, and taking refuge in them is the refuge of the cause; one's own mind is completely pure, and the Three Jewels are naturally present, this is the place of refuge of the result, and placing it single-pointedly without acceptance, rejection, or modification is the refuge of the result. From the perspective of desiring the result from the outside, it can be considered the result, but from the perspective of promising for the sake of this result, it can be considered the cause. However, because it is spontaneously present in oneself, without wishing for it elsewhere, abiding in that state is the result, and taking refuge in the external Three Jewels as a contributing factor to accomplish this result is established as the refuge of the cause. As stated in Yeshe Drubpa, "Lord of the three mandalas"

Furthermore, if one desires perfect abundance, why yearn for the cause? The very nature of the luminous mind is the master of the three mandalas. To single-pointedly abide in equipoise through realization is indeed taught as the supreme of fruits. Thus it is. Moreover, the Three Jewels can be identified as the Lesser Vehicle and the Great Vehicle. The first is: the Buddha is the emanation body of the supreme Buddha. The Dharma is the essence of scripture, both in terms of teachings and realization, consisting of the twelve branches of scripture, and the samadhi of individual tantras and paths, and so forth. The Sangha consists of two types: ordinary beings and noble ones. Among ordinary beings, there are the lesser Sangha, including novice monks and nuns, parents, and lay practitioners. The greater Sangha consists of fully ordained monks, and when these four groups are complete, it is called the assembled Sangha. Among the noble ones are those who have entered the stream, those who return once, those who do not return, and those who have entered the state of arhatship. The one who abides is the Buddha. The Great Vehicle is also renowned as: the Buddha is the essence of the three bodies, possessing two purities, ultimately fulfilling the two benefits. As it says in the Uttaratantra: 'Unconditioned and spontaneously accomplished, not realized through the conditions of others, possessing wisdom, compassion, and power, is the Buddha who possesses two benefits.' Thus it is. The Dharma is that whose essence is beyond speech, thought, and expression, being the path or antidote to becoming a Buddha by nature. Its aspects are characterized by the truth of the path and the truth of cessation, being the Dharma of meaning and the Dharma of words, the twelve branches of scripture. Again, as it says in the same text: 'Without thought, without duality, without conception, by the very aspect of purity and clarity as an antidote, whatever is freed from attachment by whatever, that which possesses the characteristics of the two truths is the Dharma.' The two free from attachment are included in the truth of cessation and the truth of the path. Thus it is. The two cessations are: the cessation of discrimination, which is the removal of previously existing defilements by an antidote, thus being without elaboration; and the cessation of non-discrimination, which establishes the meaning that defilements or elaborations are naturally non-existent like the sky. The path is the part realized through the accumulations, joining, seeing, and meditation. Holding the characteristics of the two truths is all the Dharma of teachings and realization. The Sangha is the new seeing of the meaning of the luminous nature of mind, abiding on the ten bhumis of the noble ones. As it says in the same text: 'Because of the purity of the wisdom seeing the inner meaning of how it is and how many things there are,'
