Thus, unwavering faith is very important, and the benefits of faith are: In the "Noble Lamp of the Teachings Sutra," it says: "If one were to honor sentient beings, as numerous as the dust particles in ten realms, with all forms of happiness for eons, it would not equal the merit of having faith in this Dharma, for it possesses surpassing qualities." Furthermore, the "Vinaya Pitaka" states: "O Bhikshus, since it is difficult to obtain excellent things, one should rely on faith as a virtuous friend, rely on supportive companions, and always abandon evil friends. Seek the sacred Dharma, contemplate its meaning, and protect the precepts like precious jewels. Strive diligently to generate the supreme Bodhicitta. Before long, one will attain the wisdom of the Buddha." Thirdly, the secret preliminaries are seven: Taking refuge, generating Bodhicitta, the seven-branch practice, the meditation and recitation of Vajrasattva, offering the mandala, Guru Yoga, receiving the four empowerments, and dedicating the merit with aspirations. Having thus presented the general summary of the topics, the individual divisions are explained below. First, regarding the meaning of taking refuge and the actual practice of taking refuge: Firstly, the reason why individuals with lesser faculties must gradually enter the Mahayana path and progress from higher to higher is explained. As stated in the Nirvana Sutra: 'Like the rungs of a ladder, the profound teachings I have taught should be learned gradually and diligently, not abruptly but systematically. Just as a small child gradually develops physical strength, so too is this Dharma. From the initial stage of entry to the point of complete fulfillment.' As it is said. Regardless of whether individuals with sharp faculties enter through overwhelming faith, the foundation and cornerstone of all vehicles depend on the practice of taking refuge. The individuals who serve as the object of refuge are also divided into three types—lower, intermediate, and higher—based on their motivations. If someone, fearing the suffering of the three lower realms, takes refuge in the Three Jewels to attain the happiness of good rebirths and heavenly realms, their goal is solely temporary happiness, and nothing else. Therefore, they are called individuals of lower capacity. If someone, fearing the suffering of samsara, takes refuge in the Three Jewels to attain peace and happiness for themselves alone, they are called individuals of intermediate capacity, seeking only to liberate themselves from samsara.

This is because the goal is the fruit of liberation. Seeing the suffering of other beings in endless samsara, if one takes refuge in the Three Jewels in order to liberate them from the suffering of samsara, then one is called a great person, because the goal is to desire Buddhahood for the benefit of all beings. This is also different from the qualities of the lesser and intermediate persons, and it is considered very important to learn the conduct of the great person for the benefit of all beings. As it is said in Jowo Je's "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment": "If one seeks only one's own peace, that person is called intermediate. Whoever, through the suffering of their own continuum of thoughts, wishes to completely extinguish all the suffering of others, that person is the supreme one." Regarding time, ordinary people are until the fulfillment of their desired deity, especially until the attainment of heaven, intermediate ones are until before death, ultimately until the attainment of Arhatship, and great ones are until the attainment of the state of Bodhi, or until the wisdom of the Buddha is not attained. With three types of motivation, from ordinary, excellent to unsurpassed, one proceeds until the state of Buddhahood is not attained. As it is said in the "Resting Meditation": "Time also follows the motivation, the small ones go until the fruit of happiness in the next life, the two intermediate ones go as long as they live, and ultimately they go until the fruit of Hearer and Solitary Realizer is attained. The excellent ones always go until Bodhi, and wisdom immeasurable to infinite." The objects of refuge are of two types, common and uncommon, namely the causal vehicle that wishes to achieve in the future, and the resultant vehicle of one's own mind that wishes to achieve in the present. Among these, the objects of the lesser and intermediate persons are common, while the object of the great person is uncommon. Among these, the refuge of the cause is to go as a guide to the wisdom of the fruit, while the refuge of the fruit is to wish to actually accomplish the Three Jewels of the fruit in one's own continuum, and to promise to be a friend to both. Possessing equal ritual and compassion, as it is said in the "Ornament of the Sutras": "Because of desiring that reality, one promises, and that should also be classified as compassion." The vehicle of tenets is to take refuge wishing to attain Buddhahood at the end of countless eons in the future.
