The first of the seven is also faith, and having it is noble. From the secret, the inconceivable, it is having faith, joy, and devotion, and a mind without defilement. Without doubt about karma and its ripening, without hesitation or double-mindedness, having devotion, discernment, and conviction. Knowing that the karma of virtue and vice and its ripening are not wasted, one does not commit evil deeds even for the sake of one's life, but practices the ten paths of virtuous action. Through generosity, enjoyment increases; through moral discipline, higher realms; through learning, wisdom; and through meditation, all qualities increase. So it is said. The faults of lacking faith: From the *Ratnarāśi*: For people without faith, white dharma does not arise, just as green sprouts do not arise from seeds burned by fire. And from the *Wish-Fulfilling Treasury*: Like a stone at the bottom of the ocean, devoid of the dry land of liberation; like a boat without relatives, there is no time to be freed from existence; like a beggar with a severed arm, there is no share of virtue; like a burned seed, there is no sprout of enlightenment; like a blind person, the form of dharma is not visible; like a pit of cyclic existence, one wanders constantly in cyclic existence. Thus, to seek the state of enlightenment, one must generate important faith. The place of birth is also to be saddened by seeing the nature of cyclic existence and sinful friends, seeing the supports of the Three Jewels, hearing the stories of noble lands and holy beings, believing in the karma of cause and effect, and gaining a mind for dharma. Relying on these, one generates and increases it. From the *Wish-Fulfilling Treasury*: Also, increasing through causes: Relying on holy beings and virtuous friends, viewing sutras and tantras, contemplating death, believing in karma and its effects, striving more than before in hearing, thinking, and meditating. From this, faith itself is accomplished as increasing. Thus, relying on the holy lama, one should generate devotion from the depths of one's heart, relying on friends who are mixed with dharma and one's own mind, viewing profound sutras and tantras, contemplating death, impermanence, and the cause and effect of karma, and increasing through striving in profound meditation and practice. One should learn and know the causes of the decline of faith and abandon them. From the *Wish-Fulfilling Treasury*: The causes of decline are discerning the lama's faults, associating with ordinary people, and using desired qualities as one pleases.

Oh! Laziness and negligence lead to many worldly affairs. These and others are non-Dharma activities. It is said that the demon will cause the blessings to diminish when the time is right. When entering the Dharma, the signs of the demon's obstruction are: criticizing the faults of the Lama, the virtuous spiritual friend, and all Dharma practitioners; associating with vulgar, sinful friends; diminishing diligence in practice; doubting the Dharma; indulging in desires at will; lacking respect for the Three Jewels; and treating karma and its results crudely. If these occur, one should turn away from them by contemplating the virtues of the Lama and Dharma friends, generating pure perception and respect for all practitioners, recognizing that seeing others' faults is one's own fault, thereby achieving self-liberation, not associating with vulgar people, and remembering the faults of desires. In short, recognize the faults that diminish faith, understand that this is the work of the demon, and subdue one's mind with the Dharma. It is essential not to confuse the Dharma with the individual. Furthermore, in the Mother Sutra, it is said: "The evil demon comes before beginners and even prevents their devotion, and also causes the actions of Bodhisattvas to turn away." Therefore, since one cannot withstand the tests, one must abandon temporary faith and cultivate steadfast faith. As it is said in the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury: "Recognizing and abandoning the faults of faith, there is no other place to gain faith except in the presence of the Guru. It increases and decreases slightly with conditions. After eliminating bad conditions, there is no faith at all. Having too many thoughts and trying everything, one cannot last long. Being uncertain about everything and acting as one pleases. Having no reliance and being impulsive, even small conditions can shake one. Abandon these six situations and place trust for a long time." Therefore, some beginners appear to have great faith in the Lama, but after leaving, they are worse than ordinary people. When encountering conditions, faith arises quickly but disappears just as quickly. Or, under the torment of desires, wealth, or illness, they show great faith until they are liberated, but once the goal is achieved, the faith disappears. Also, not focusing on one practice, but engaging in multiple practices simultaneously. Without unwavering faith in one Lama and one profound Dharma, but entering as one pleases, this is also a nature without reliance. A little faith arises, and a little condition causes it to diminish, disappearing like lightning. Abandon these, do not feel weary, do not have increase or decrease, but have steadfast faith.
