They can live for five thousand years, and some hungry ghosts can live for ten thousand hundred thousands. The karma of being born there is: defiling the offerings of the Three Jewels, being stingy with good deeds and creating great obstacles, speaking nonsense to relatives and friends, lying, sowing discord, and using various deceptions to covet and plunder the wealth of others. Sixth, contemplate the suffering of animals: The Letter to a Friend says: In the realm of animals, there are killings, bondage, beatings, and various sufferings. For those who abandon peaceful virtues, they devour each other, which is extremely unbearable. Some die for pearls, wool, bones, blood, meat, and leather. Others have no autonomy and are used after being pierced with feet, hands, iron tools, and iron hooks. Thus, animals are of two types: those who dwell in the depths and those who are scattered. Those who dwell in the depths are in the outer great ocean and in the dark waters between the outer continents of the iron fence, where fish, shellfish, crocodiles, etc., are without gaps, crowded like wine dregs. The large eat the small, and the small eat the large, and the suffering of hunger and thirst is immeasurable. The nagas, whether day or night, morning or evening, suffer from alternating hot and cold, hunger and thirst, pleasure and pain, and rain of gravel. Some are completely abandoned and not accepted, without friends. In common, they are ignorant and foolish, with a nature of darkness, and face various harms such as the terror of garudas and mantras. Those who are scattered are in the mountains, plains, waters, rocks, and skies of the human realm. Those insects, birds, and wild animals that are not owned by humans are constantly tormented by the fear of the appearance of enemies, and there is no peace in their hearts. Single-footed, two-footed, birds, reptiles, oviparous, viviparous, the worms in the body are eaten by birds and beasts of prey. People kill them at will, and even those animals that are owned are sheared, pierced through the nose, whipped and driven, or suffer from heavy burdens, or are killed for meat, blood, skin, and bones.

, and being foolish and deluded, they are confused by not knowing what to accept and reject, thus suffering, as well as experiencing hunger, thirst, heat, cold, fatigue, etc., similar to the sufferings of hell and hungry ghosts. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Abiding for a kalpa." This means that some beings' lifespans can last for a kalpa, while others are as short as a moment, a day, a night, a month, a year, etc., with various uncertain durations. The karma that causes rebirth in these realms is due to ignorance, delusion, and not distinguishing between good and bad. Thus, contemplating the sufferings of the three lower realms, if we were to put our finger in fire and leave it there for a day, or stay naked in an icy cave during the cold winter, or go without food and drink for days, or even be bitten by mosquitoes and lice, it would be difficult to bear. How then can we endure the sufferings of hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals? By comparing it to our own current experiences, we should generate strong fear, aversion, and renunciation, thereby motivating ourselves to diligently practice and make our precious human life meaningful. Secondly, even the higher realms of humans, gods, and demigods are of the nature of suffering. First, consider the sufferings of humans: First, while in the mother's womb, one feels cramped, experiences foul odors and darkness, and the changes in temperature from the mother's food and the effects of movement, feeling like falling into a ravine or being squeezed. One spends months counting the days in a state of painful awareness, like being in prison. At birth, one is headfirst, pulled out from a narrow opening, feeling like being touched and whipped, or like being skinned. When held in the hands, it feels like a bird being snatched by an eagle. As stated in the Sutra of Entering the Womb of Delight: "The sufferings of dwelling in the womb, are unbearable, like an ocean of suffering, born from the cause of afflictions, confused by the six karmas." Then there is the suffering of aging: with the passing of youth, the body's color fades, becoming unsightly bluish-black or ashen. The body becomes hunched over, and the limbs become crooked. One is covered with white hair and wrinkles. Walking and moving become difficult, and one often falls. Eyesight becomes dim, and hearing declines. The tongue cannot taste flavors as they are. Speech becomes slurred, and eating too little leads to hunger, while eating too much is difficult to digest. These are all indications of aging.
