When arriving, one is pierced by iron thorns and terrified by being besieged by wild animals. Even if one escapes from that, one is tormented by heat, and when running due to thirst, one arrives at a place where a river can be seen, but falls into a river of transformation filled with extreme heat, a bottomless river. When sinking to the bottom, flesh and bone separate, leaving only white bones. When floating to the top, flesh grows again and one sinks again. Wanting to escape, but on both sides there are hell guards holding weapons, not allowing escape. Sometimes one is pulled out with an iron hook and placed face up, roasted by a burning fire, and molten copper is poured into the mouth, etc., tormented by intense suffering. Among these, the needle forest and the silk-cotton trees in the forest are classified as one, being the four neighboring hells. The lifespan of each of these hells is hundreds of thousands of years, suffering until the karma is exhausted. The fourth is the suffering of the bordering hells, located near the fundamental hells, and in uncertain places such as the seashore, mountains, rocks, water, fire, and sky. The sentient beings of the bordering hells gather in various different forms, or exist alone, etc., without any certainty. They endure any unbearable suffering such as heat and cold, hunger and thirst, cutting, and cooking, whether for half a day, a moment, or permanently, suffering for various lengths of time due to the differences in karma, hence they are called bordering hells. The fifth is the contemplation on the suffering of the pretas: Their location is mostly five hundred yojanas below Jambudvipa. The scattered situation is like being spread throughout the earth, mountains, and rivers. As stated in the *Satipaṭṭhāna Sūtra*, they are divided into thirty-six types, which can be summarized into three types: those with external obstructions, those with internal obstructions, and those with common obstructions to food and drink. External obstructions refer to the danger of hunger and thirst, causing the mouth and body to dry up and become extremely emaciated. The body is sixteen cubits or various shapes. All food and drink are seen as pus and vomit, making them unable to be consumed. From a distance, one sees food, drink, enjoyment, rivers, trees, and fruit, but when one approaches, the food disappears without a trace. The water dries up or turns into pus and blood. The trees wither and no fruit can be seen.

Moreover, even if it is not like that, due to the obstruction and protection of many people wielding weapons, there is the suffering of not having the freedom to use. The internal obscurations are: As it is said in the Sutra: "Some have mouths as small as the eye of a needle, but their bellies are as large as mountains, and they are tormented by hunger. Even a little bit of impure matter, they do not have the power to seek." As it is said, their bodies are huge, their bellies are as large as a region, their limbs are as thin as horse tails, they have one head or eighteen heads, and so on, in various forms. Rivers fill their bellies, and many continents of the six realms form in their abdomens, manifesting scenes of fighting. Their mouths are as small as the eye of a needle, their throats are as thin as bowstrings. Even if they find a little food, it cannot enter their mouths; even if it enters, the food falls into their cheeks. When they drink, their mouths are parched by poison, and even if they swallow a little, it cannot pass through their throats. Even if it passes through, their bellies cannot be filled, and that is suffering. The obscurations of food and drink are: Whatever food and drink enters their mouths turns into burning flames, burning their internal organs and so on. They eat garbage, that is, they eat feces, urine, pus, blood, phlegm, mucus, and other impure and foul-smelling things, as well as poison, sparks, and other harmful things, and they must eat things that cause suffering. The common obscurations are: They always suffer unbearable hunger and thirst. Without clothes, they are burned by heat and frozen by cold. They are burned by the summer moon and frozen by the winter sun. In summer, clouds also rain fire, and so on, the seasons are reversed. They are always tired and exhausted from searching. Their bones are charred and emit flames. They become enemies with each other, are bound, beaten, and killed, and must endure great suffering of fear of death for a long time. The minor pretas are: When resting, it is said: "The pretas and demons that wander in the sky, as well as yakshas, rakshasas, fierce ones, and kings, etc., wander everywhere from beginningless time with the magical power of karma, manifesting various kinds of harm, spreading diseases, stealing splendor, and interrupting life. The length of life is one day for a human month. Their own lifespan is five hundred years, equivalent to fifteen thousand human years. They suffer in the realm of Yama." As it is said. And in the "Letter to a Friend" it is said: "They will not die in five thousand or ten thousand years." That is, taking one day for a human month,
