The five heinous crimes and the five near-heinous crimes are: killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, causing dissension in the Sangha, and drawing blood from the body of a Tathagata with malicious intent; these are the five heinous crimes. Destroying stupas, killing Bodhisattvas, causing Arhat nuns to lose their chastity, killing learners, and seizing the assembly places of the Sangha; these are known as the five near-heinous crimes. Furthermore, considering both the object and the action, there are twelve heavy and perverse transgressions. Among these, the four heavy ones are: the high rank of the wise, offerings to monks, food for practitioners, and the wealth of mantra practitioners; these are called the four perverse heavy ones. Adding to these the four heavy ones of decline, disparagement, and veneration, totaling twelve, they become sixteen. The eight perverse actions are: disparaging and praising the white and black sides, disturbing the minds of virtuous people, breaking up the gatherings of faithful people, abandoning one's lama, deity, and spiritual siblings, and separating mandalas and relatives. These are said to be the eight perverse actions. That is to say, having abandoned in one's mind as many negative actions as possible, represented by the three poisons, jealousy, stinginess, and so on, which are root afflictions, secondary afflictions, and all unwholesome actions motivated by misconduct, along with their inherent faults, one then possesses the vows of abandoning them and refraining from repeating them in body and speech. Abandoning them in one's mind means remembering the faults and not wanting to do them. Refraining from repeating them in body and speech means not only not doing those unwholesome actions habitually, but also, even if doing them occasionally would be profitable and one were capable of doing them, one would not engage in bodily and verbal actions because one remembers the faults. Furthermore, giving charity out of a desire for fame is an example of applying virtue with a dark intention, while striking and speaking harshly with the intention of benefiting others is an example of applying vice with a pure intention; it is said that these also alternately produce happiness and suffering. Furthermore, actions that are not seized by any thought of virtue or non-virtue, and that have no definite aim, such as eating, walking, and sleeping, are nothing more than causes of samsara, and are therefore called unspecified actions. Without pointlessly falling into indifference, one must diligently strive with mindfulness only in virtuous actions that are entirely pure. If one wonders whether the results of virtuous and non-virtuous actions will ripen immediately, then if the object and intention are very powerful, they will ripen in this very life.

Maturation refers to the experience in this very life of the powerful karmas that have been done and accumulated; the exhaustion of the karmic results of previous lives in this life, followed by the arising and experience of the maturation of karmic results used in this life in future lives; and maturation in future lives, three lives hence, and many lifetimes later, to be experienced at other times. Moreover, if virtuous deeds are done but not dedicated, they may be exhausted by regret and anger, etc., and if sinful deeds are done but exhausted by the power of confession and other antidotes, it is uncertain whether they will be experienced. In this regard, the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness states: "Fire may become cold, wind may be caught by a lasso, the sun and moon may fall to the ground, but the ripening of karma cannot deceive." Furthermore, the Klong gsal states: "The body and wisdom of the Buddhas, and all appearances, are one's own mind. Mind itself is free from grasping, therefore the fruit is realized at the point of exhaustion. Groundless, rootless, primordially pure." Thus, at the time of the purification of dualistic grasping, karmic cause and effect are completely purified. Therefore, until liberation, since karma exists, one must adopt and abandon in relation to cause and effect. Fourth, samsara is suffering: Thus, all of samsara, which arises from ignorance, is merely the act of desiring happiness while engaging in suffering. Happiness is nowhere to be found, and hundreds of thousands of sufferings torment the mindstream. Do not let the circumstances of happiness and suffering go to waste, but transform them into the path and engage in the dharma of the result. So it is said. In this place of samsara, although one desires happiness, one does not practice the virtuous deeds that are the cause of happiness. Although one does not want suffering, one does not abandon the sinful deeds that generate suffering, and therefore one takes it upon oneself. The Bodhicharyavatara states: "Although there is a mind that wishes to abandon suffering, it runs directly towards suffering itself. Although one desires happiness, due to delusion, one destroys one's own happiness as if it were an enemy." Just like that, due to ignorance of what to adopt and abandon, one does not adopt and abandon the causes of happiness and suffering, but forcibly desires happiness, and therefore it does not arise. Therefore, one must contemplate the suffering of the six realms, wandering in the three realms of samsara. The Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness states: "Sentient beings in hell are tormented by the fires of hell, pretas are tormented by hunger and thirst, animals are tormented by eating each other, humans are tormented by the struggle for survival, gods are tormented by carelessness. Samsara is like the tip of a needle, happiness is never present."
