Therefore, depending on the manner of practice, there are ten methods of accomplishment. In the Madhyāntavibhāga it says: Writing letters, making offerings, giving alms, listening, reading, holding, explaining, reciting, contemplating, and meditating; the nature of these ten practices is an immeasurable accumulation of merit. Likewise, in the key instructions for all Dharma practices, it is also taught in accordance with this. Regarding those matters, learning to the best of one's ability, depending on the method of learning, there are ten. Furthermore, generosity, discipline, patience, diligence, meditation, and wisdom are the perfections. As mentioned above, the methods of accomplishment and meaning are the same, and depending on the method of encouraging the common continuum of oneself and others, there are ten pāramitās. If the ten virtuous actions and the meditation of the four formless absorptions are not connected, then the ripening result is only enjoying the happiness of gods and humans in the higher realms, which is called meritorious action. If one becomes proficient in meditating on form and the formless, then being born in the form realm and the formless realms is a virtuous action with outflows, which is called unwavering action. Even if it is a virtuous action, if the intention is impure due to pride and jealousy, etc., the sutras say that one will be reborn as an asura. Just as the owner's fruit ripens in the field, adorned with flowers and fruits, without harm and easy to walk, etc., these are similar results, and one is happy to perform similar ten virtuous actions. Experiencing similar results is longevity, freedom from illness, wealth, absence of family disputes and enemies, etc. The virtuous results of the body are praised by all, and fame spreads far and wide. If seen, one will be delighted and desire to be close. Words are considered trustworthy, which is the virtuous result of speech. All things are accomplished as desired, and if others see it, they will be happy and satisfied. Having a view that believes in cause and effect is the virtuous result of mind. Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas, and Secret Mantra, the three individuals on the path of the three vehicles, each generate bodhicitta, practice the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment, the four immeasurables, the six pāramitās, etc., and all virtuous actions are combined with bodhicitta. Taking generosity as an example, the three—generosity, the object of giving, and the giver—are without attachment, like a dream. The three spheres are empty of true clinging, which is without an object of focus. Afterwards, the dedication is like the illusion of a dream. Those three

Virtuous actions that are grasped by wisdom are uncontaminated virtues, which are the path or cause of Buddhahood, and are in accordance with liberation. Virtuous actions that are not grasped by such wisdom are contaminated virtues, called the accordance of merit. If you think that small virtuous and evil actions do not cause benefit and harm, that is not correct. It is said in the "Collection of Special Expositions": "Do not belittle small evils, thinking that they will not produce consequences. Just as a water droplet gradually fills a large vessel, so gradually accumulating evil deeds causes all beings to fall into evil destinies." Therefore, the evil deeds that should be abandoned are: desire, hatred, ignorance, etc., and the actions produced by them are non-virtuous actions. As such, although there are many kinds of non-virtuous actions, if we briefly summarize the important ones, there are ten. Among the three actions of the body, killing is: wanting to kill, the object to be killed is not mistaken and is killed, and the intention to kill does not cease until death. Taking what is not given is: taking or stealing other people's property without their permission, whatever it may be, as long as the thought of obtaining it arises in oneself. Sexual misconduct is: non-place, referring to women owned by others, including relatives within seven generations; prostitutes who have not been paid; those protected by parents, kings, etc.; those protected by vows of celibacy. Non-time, referring to those who are sick, sad, pregnant, menstruating, and never satisfied with desire. Non-places, referring to stupas, temples, the center of many women, uneven and hard ground that is harmful to those who walk. Non-path, referring to relying on doors other than the genitals. These are in terms of householders, but for those who practice celibacy, any kind of non-celibate behavior is sexual misconduct. Among the four actions of speech, lying is: changing cognition with a deceptive mind, knowingly speaking untruthfully, and the other person understands the meaning. This is not only an act of speech, but also bodily gestures can lead to the same result. Slander is: wanting to divide harmonious parties, speaking divisive words, and the other party understands the meaning. Harsh speech is: directly pointing out the other person's faults, etc., saying words that are unpleasant to hear and hurt the heart.
