Explaining, debating, writing, and the activities of listening, contemplating, and meditating, Day and night, without negligence, may I strive diligently, With pure mind, free from non-understanding and wrong understanding, May I be able to illuminate the Buddha's teachings. Regarding the fire altar: If possible, build a brick fire altar, one cubit wide and half a cubit high. If it is a dug-out fire altar, it should be half a cubit deep and one cubit wide. In either case, build a four-finger-wide rim extending outward from the top of the altar, and outside that, build a four-finger-wide, high ledge that slopes slightly inward. If it is a drawn fire altar, the width of the altar, rim, and ledge should be the same as above, except that the height can be omitted. Inside the altar, draw a small vajra chain link, and inside that, draw an eight-petaled white lotus, and in the center of the lotus, draw a circle with an eight-finger-wide white vajra. The rim should have a halo of white light, and the ledge should have a vajra chain. Draw half-moon vajras on the four corners of the platform. Paint the outside of the altar and the platform white, and inside, pile up auspicious firewood such as willow or soapberry, or heavy objects without life, level with the height of the altar, and place a brazier with a tripod inside. On your right, place the burnt offerings in two neat rows in separate containers, according to the categories of worldly and transcendent deities. On the left, place piles of three grains—rice, wheat, and mustard—and the five offerings. For worldly deities, place a white round torma and a set of offerings. Paint all the offerings white, and in front of you, place the vajra bell, nectar vase, holy water, and other necessities.
