痛苦是，即使获得少许食物和享受，也会变成沸腾的铁水和铜水，并被焚烧。生于彼处的业力是，虽然自己无法自主，却以各种方式阻挠他人供养布施，以及盗用、玷污上师的财物所致。身体也呈现各种各样的形态，有的是两个头，有的是三个头，有的是五个头，有的是肚子像水池一样大，有的是像量度单位一样大，有的是没有排泄孔，有的是嘴巴能发出远距离的声音，一个、两个、三个不等。住处位于地下世界的西方，名叫忆念洲。食物是吃秽物，也即是食用所有世间的各种秽物，因此被称为食秽饿鬼。寿命长达三百万年。痛苦的程度是，如果未经布施，连大小便都无法获得，有些人即使获得，也像内心有障碍的人一样，遭受痛苦的折磨等等。生于彼处的业力是，对高贵的人说妄语，玷污供品，以及玷污、亵渎、浪费上师和堪布的供养。身体也多种多样，大的有身形覆盖三量度，长着许多头，或者身高八肘，长着十八个头等等。住处遍布所有洲和世界。除了这些之外，还有各种各样的饿鬼，每个身体都长着三个头、五个头、十个头、十八个头等等，对于饮食的需求，有饥渴和拒绝接受等等各种各样的显现。有的饿鬼觉得肚子里有大河在奔腾，有的饿鬼觉得六道众生的许多洲都聚集在自己的腹中，发出喧闹、哀嚎、争斗等等的声音。寿命也长达一百万年，或者更多或更少，各种各样。生于彼处的业力是，说谎、挑拨离间、用各种欺骗手段觊觎他人的财产等等。住处位于地下名叫各种忆念的洲。

Suffering is that even a little food and enjoyment obtained turns into boiling iron and copper water and is burned. The karma of being born there is that, although one is not in control of oneself, one obstructs others' offerings and generosity in various ways, and steals and defiles the property of the lama. The body also appears in various forms, some with two heads, some with three heads, some with five heads, some with bellies as big as ponds, some as big as measures, some without excretory orifices, and some with mouths that can emit sounds over long distances, one, two, or three at a time. The dwelling is in the west of the underworld, called the Continent of Remembrance. The food is eating filth, that is, eating all kinds of filth from all realms, so they are called filth-eating pretas. The lifespan is three million years. The extent of suffering is that even feces and urine cannot be obtained without being offered; some, even if they obtain it, suffer torment like those with inner obscurations. The karma of being born there is that one speaks falsehoods to noble people, defiles offerings, and defiles, desecrates, and wastes the offerings to the lama and khenpo. The body is also diverse: the large ones have bodies covering three measures and many heads, or are eight cubits tall with eighteen heads, and so on. The dwelling pervades all continents and worlds. Besides these, there are various other pretas, each with three, five, ten, eighteen, or more heads on each body, with various appearances regarding the need for food and drink, such as hunger and thirst, and rejection. Some pretas feel that a great river is rushing and flowing in their stomachs, and some feel that many continents of the six realms are gathered in their bellies, making noises, wailing, fighting, and so on. Lifespans also last a million years each, or more or less, in various ways. The karma of being born there is that one lies, slanders, causes discord between those who are in harmony, and covets the wealth of others through various deceptions. The dwelling is in the continent called Various Remembrances in the underworld.

Furthermore, along with the formation of the world, there arise beings called "hungry ghosts of existence," the hordes of hungry ghosts who control the elements, the demons of gods, the demons of beings, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas, flesh-eaters, brahmins, belly-crawlers, matrikas, intoxicators, forgetters, fierce ones, youths, maras, tsan demons, mu demons, asuras, planets, garudas, directional guardians, the son of Vishnu, the great black woman, the five flesh-eating demons, the demons born together, and those who dislike dwelling in the white direction, and so on. In short, the category of beings who have various bodies in various places, engage in various actions, and experience various sufferings, is far more numerous than the dust in the sun's rays. They arise from the fruits of various non-virtuous deeds committed in the past, and their forms and lifespans also vary. These are also called the hordes of hungry ghosts. Among animals, there are those called "one-footed," which are species that walk on a single foot; those called "many-footed," which are species whose bodies are covered with feet from head to tail; those called "winged creatures," which are species that move with wings; those called "hidden walkers," which are species whose feet are not visible externally and move with breath; those called "belly-crawlers," which are species that move by dragging their bellies on the ground; there are animals that dwell in the realm of the four outer elements, and there are hordes of animals consisting of twenty-one thousand kinds of insects that dwell in the bodies of inner beings, and also various kinds of groups that are large, small, and extremely tiny. Their abodes pervade all outer and inner environments, and in particular, the general abode of animals is in the dark abysses between continents where the sun and moon do not reach, and in the inner spaces of Mount Meru and so on. Their number is countless, beyond expression, and inconceivable. Their forms are as described above, but the particularly large ones have many yojanas, and the small ones have bodies as small as the tip of a severed hair. Their shapes are various, such as terrifying, unbearable to look at, and extremely wretched. The length of their lives also varies, with some living for many kalpas, some living for one kalpa, and some living for half a kalpa.
