Without it, being confused by the obscuration of ignorance, there is a risk of wandering in samsara knowingly. Therefore, it is crucial to offer advice on how to prevent this. If fervent concern is not planted in the heart, when the final age arrives, demons will obstruct the contemplation of Dharma. Some demons are fathers, some are mothers, some are relatives and close kin. Wealth, possessions, fields, houses, enjoyments, etc., in many situations of rising and falling prices, will manifest many transformations. Even when contemplating Dharma, there is a risk of being interrupted. Therefore, words of fervent concern to prevent this should be engraved in the depths of the heart. After that, if one does not consider the future life, but only shaves the head, changes the name, and wears yellow robes, outwardly entering the Dharma, yet seeks only the benefits of this life, devouring the food of faith and black wealth, performing village rituals, exorcising demons, and subjugating corpses, treating the sacred Dharma as gold dust and snacks, and engaging in the trade of food and clothing, there is a risk of using the Dharma to accomplish the affairs of this life. Therefore, to prevent this, one must consider the future life. Even if one contemplates the great meaning of the future life and speaks of the sacred Dharma, if one does not engage in the acceptance and rejection of cause and effect, it is like a parrot repeating Dharma words. Speaking of virtue while committing evil, becoming arrogant when one has qualities, competing with others when one lacks them, and suppressing those who are similar to oneself. Relying on the Dharma, yet accumulating sins. Therefore, to prevent this, one must value cause and effect. Even if one values and contemplates the Dharma of cause and effect, if one does not go alone to a solitary mountain retreat, the imprints of non-virtuous actions will become strong, appearances will be inverted and confused, and one will be disturbed by the attachment and aversion of many enemies and friends, there is a risk of knowingly obstructing the path to liberation. Therefore, to prevent this, one must go to the mountains. Even if one goes to a solitary mountain retreat, if one does not reduce attachment to food and clothing, still thinking of delicious food and enjoyments, and craving beautiful clothes, etc., then the suffering endured in the first half of life may be sold as merchandise in the second half of life. Therefore, to prevent this, it is best to cut off attachment to food and clothing from within. Therefore, it is crucial to abandon the eight worldly concerns. If a practitioner does not abandon the eight worldly concerns, it is like a fierce lion cub wandering as a dog. These samsaric beings who strive for this life exchange this life for the next because they cannot relinquish their attachment to the eight worldly concerns. Merely balancing the eight worldly concerns in favor of this life, such a person is a lower-level practitioner. Having no expectation or fear of the eight worldly concerns, such a person is a middling practitioner.

Alas! In the realm of the eight worldly dharmas' essence, if one possesses this, they are considered an excellent practitioner. A person without attachment or aversion to the eight worldly dharmas is undoubtedly on the island of Dharma practice. Even if the fortress of the eight worldly dharmas is destroyed, if adverse circumstances and prosperity are not mixed, wisdom will not arise. Therefore, the benefit of practice lies in adverse circumstances. If no benefit is gained from adverse circumstances, due to the influence of dullness, sinking, and confusion, practice cannot reach the standard, as there is a danger of being obstructed and carried away. To avoid this, approach adverse circumstances. When mixing prosperity with adverse circumstances, if one cannot maintain equanimity in conduct, there is a risk of being overwhelmed by the four maras. Having no acceptance or rejection of pleasure and pain, being free from abandoning or adopting good and bad, and severing the cords of comparison from within—these four points must be well valued. When acting in equanimity in this way, the root of everything lies in pleasure and pain: having no attachment to pleasure and no aversion to pain. It is crucial to exhaust desire from within. Even if liberated from pleasure and pain in this way, if one does not support patrons and attendants, due to attachment and hatred towards the black and white of human affairs, karma will become an obstacle to Dharma practice. Due to the influence of distraction, practice may be scattered like winnowed chaff. To avoid this, distance yourself from patrons. Contact with patrons also arises from the distinction between enemies and friends. Therefore, enemies and obstacles that harm this life are the habitual tendencies of past negative karma, and so-called loving relatives are companions who pull you down. Therefore, view all enemies and friends as pleasure and pain in a dream, and sever the bonds of attachment and aversion from the root. In this way, even if external accumulations of faults are restrained through faith in the Dharma, if one's own illusory body is at ease and lazy, and body, speech, and mind do not focus on the Dharma, then the affairs of today and tomorrow and prolonged waiting will separate meaning, Dharma, and the practitioner, just as a child builds a sandcastle, which is of no benefit to happiness. If practice remains in contemplation, meaning becomes insignificant. If one cannot abandon attachment to this life, one cannot attain the fruit of the path to happiness. Therefore, contemplate the affairs of today, tomorrow, and the years and months, without hesitation or procrastination. There is no way to exhaust the connections of karma. Without rest for body, speech, and mind, there is a danger of being carried away by the affairs of this life. To avoid this, do not make excessive preparations or expansions for this life, be content with what comes, and be satisfied.
