Diligence should be repeatedly practiced. With the power of hearing and thinking, do your best to continue the previous state. At the time of focusing attention, although it is difficult to remain in the continuum at this time, strive again and again to abide in it. Like a shooting star that sways, if you are distracted from the continuum to other places, like diverting a torrent into a channel, bring it back with mindfulness and abide. Like a paper kite carried away by the wind, or like water flowing down a steep slope, these first three methods of abiding, if you do not strive diligently, the mind's strong conceptual thoughts will shake, making it difficult to find an opportunity to abide, strive like building a dam. The mind-horse, which is extremely difficult to tame, must be firmly grasped with the rope of mindfulness, placed in the fence of relaxed equanimity, and cherish the urging with the reins of diligence. When mindfulness becomes slightly stronger, in an inconspicuous and vague manner, just abide in the realm of consciousness, and if you gain a little firmness of mind, gather the focus inward and bring it closer to the object. Like a moth circling on a nail, at this time it is crucial to stabilize the stream of mindfulness. At that time, naturally a little joy will arise in that samadhi, like a bee sucking nectar, when you gain the desire to abide, the unbearable agitation will subside slightly, and this will definitely arise. These two, close abiding and taming, even if you obtain a better abiding than before, are like water flowing through a narrow gap, subtle conceptual thoughts are busy and continuous. Like a bee circling in a vase, even if you catch it, it does not give up shaking, this is what is called taming. At this time, it is important to abide in the nature of the object with non-moving awareness. When you abide there with awareness, in order to eliminate dullness and agitation, through the action of volition, do your best to naturally pacify the various conceptual thoughts. When it is pacified, abide with the power of awareness, with a mind of equanimity, like a man resting from hard work. Slightly pacify the conceptual thoughts, because increasing becomes a place where conceptual thoughts increase, and the near afflictions are also as before, like muddy water gradually clearing, gradually pacify and abandon distraction. By prolonging the faults of abandoning distraction, at the time of tranquility and near tranquility, the experience of habituation arises, like a river flowing slowly, swaying.
