When looking at one's own mind, if there is no scattering, it is called abiding. If various thoughts arise, it is called flowing. Whichever of the two occurs, like this, one's own mind knowing itself is called awareness. If one maintains this continuously, one will know the key point that various appearances of joy and sorrow arise from one's own mind and dissolve within it. When one knows this, all appearances will be recognized as the self-appearance of the mind. Then, when staring intently at the essence of the abiding or flowing mind, one will know that although it appears in various ways, its essence is emptiness in which nothing is established. The so-called emptiness is not a nihilistic emptiness like the sky, but rather the emptiness that possesses all perfections, in which nothing is established in its own nature, while the clarity of all-knowing and all-seeing is uninterrupted. When one realizes such a secret key point of the mind, although there is no difference between the object of observation and the observer, one experiences the innate mind itself, which is the naturally luminous. This is called recognizing awareness, and it is also the place of introduction to Mahamudra and Dzogchen. If one can cultivate, this will arise. Saraha said: "Originally pure, like the nature of the sky, looking and looking, seeing ceases." And so on. The tantras say: "There is no mind on the mind, the nature of the mind is luminous." This is what is meant. There is nothing simpler than this, it is important to practice. By Mipham. May there be auspiciousness! Homage to Manjushri! If you focus on the mind, calm abiding will be accomplished. Gradually, insight will arise. In that, in the emptiness of your own heart, in the clear and bright state, draw your awareness inward and rest. This is called mind focusing on mind. If you focus on the mind, this mind, even if there is no specific target, if there is a mind, inside the body, there is nowhere else but the center of the heart. In the source of thoughts and movements, where you don't remember anything but remember everything else, stay there watching. Don't look for the mind, just leave it alone. You don't need to think about whether there is a place to leave it. It's okay to have a mind to leave. Put that inner mind to sleep, just leave it there. That is the way to leave it, you don't need to leave it. Like sunlight hitting the water, the rays shimmer and sway. The thoughts of the mind move very quickly, and it is impossible to stop them directly. If you leave the water still, the appearance of the rays will also stop.
