If one severs through diligence, one will completely triumph over the battlefield of obstacles, therefore it is said to sever the four maras. As Machig Labdrön, the dakini of wisdom, said: Sever the clinging to objects with obstruction. Sever the clinging to mind without obstruction. Sever the clinging to joy and attachment. Sever the clinging to pride and self. As it is said, being bound and falling into the snare of demons is due to the power of strong clinging to conceptualization, therefore it must be severed. To what does it cling? It clings to the conceptual mind within the nature of mind. Although in ultimate truth, the nature of mind has no clinging or binding, it appears as clinging due to the power of conceptualization, just as clouds gather in the sky, obscuring the unconceptualized face of self, obstructing the seeing of things as they are, or it is said to be clinging. To what does it cling? It clings to the four maras. How does it cling? The category of objects with obstruction clings because the mind is connected to objects, and because making them objects gives rise to much attachment, aversion, harm, and fear. Objects without obstruction cling through the mind, and merely the arising of thoughts in the mind, if not abandoned but held onto with special attention, will increase all kinds of afflictions. The mara of joy and pleasure clings through attachment, and whatever one is attached to, one is bound by it, like a pig to impurity. The mara that is proud or conceives of self as "I," clings in the manner of grasping at a truly existent object, grasping at "I, I." Therefore, until the absorption of mantra recitation dissolves into space, even if the mere appearance of those objects such as objects with obstruction is not prevented, one should know that although they appear, they are not true, and if one grasps them as true, one will be bound in the snare of demons. Therefore, severing the grasping or clinging to them is the severance of the path. Ultimately, when the steps become space, all appearances and attachments are liberated, and becoming equal in taste with the great Dharmakaya is the severance of the result. Even so, how does one sever clinging? Because one does not abandon but accepts the four objects that cause clinging, due to the power of clinging to them, clinging arises. Therefore, through ascertaining that those objects have no inherent existence, and not following after them, by saying PHAṬ (Tibetan, Devanagari: फट्, Romanized Sanskrit: phaṭ, Literal Chinese meaning: snap), one forcefully throws them away and abides in great equality, which is severing clinging. Having severed clinging in this way, there is no opportunity for the harm of the four objects to arise.

Impossible, the four causes make the Bodhisattva possess wisdom and power, the four maras are difficult to defeat and cannot be shaken, abiding in emptiness and not abandoning sentient beings, acting as spoken and possessing the blessings of the Sugata. Thus it is said. Therefore, we have been defeated in the battlefield of the maras since beginningless time, and have experienced unbearable suffering in samsara. This is because attachment has not been severed. Attachment is not severed because one does not understand the true nature of things and clings to them. The method of understanding the true nature of things and severing attachment, other than this, no matter what virtuous deeds are practiced without severing attachment, there is no way to truly win in the battlefield of the maras, this is certain. Therefore, even if the object is not accomplished, all faults arise from self-cherishing, and believing that abandoning self and cherishing others is the root of all virtues. Now, completely abandon this self-cherishing of "I will die first, I will be afraid," etc. Even if one becomes excrement again and again, one should treat all sentient beings, especially those who have become ghosts and demons due to afflictions, with great compassion. With a strong desire to temporarily nourish them with one's own flesh and blood, and ultimately place them in great Bodhi. Resolve to give away the body, and bring all appearances onto the path of illusion, especially try to transform bad conditions such as illness, suffering, and fear into the path. This is for those who have certainty in their view, bringing all appearances onto the path, like a good tree, is the actual practice of the path. The third is, putting the practice into practice, in order to obtain it for oneself in the present moment, in order to bravely enter without being shaken by external conditions, in order to increase the effectiveness of acting in the manner of samadhi, one should go to terrifying dangerous places, etc. That is, first perform the preliminary suppression meditation, and after arriving at the dangerous place, perform the intermediate subjugation meditation according to the ritual. If it does not arise, then perform the inducing meditation, etc. In this way, the degree of internal and external secret induction will arise. At that time, the superior one abides in non-action, the intermediate one focuses on non-discrimination, and the inferior one merges awareness with the Dharmadhatu, even if the phenomenal world is chaotic, one should know that for the nature of mind, everything is without action.
