When offering alcohol and leaving, after emerging from the retreat, on that day, meet with some Dharma brothers and sisters who uphold pure vows. It is necessary to overcome the tendency to look towards the enemy, and when looking towards the sun and moon, it is said that there is a connection with the sun and moon, as the previous lamas have said. Here it is said that immediately after emerging from the retreat, perform a pacifying fire offering to make up for any deficiencies, according to the circumstances. If you are uncomfortable inside the retreat, do so. Therefore, strive to avoid those things that are incompatible with practice and create favorable conditions to generate the power of mantra, and know that in this way, the fruit of mantra will be quickly produced. That is, before the retreat is over, do not meet with others; before the speech retreat is over, do not break your silence; before the mind retreat is over, do not be interrupted by strong afflictions; avoid these three kinds of broken retreats. Avoid the deity of the generation stage not being clear, the mantra being recited not being pure, and the samadhi of meditation being distracted; avoid these three violations of vows. Avoid the body's essence, the bindu, being depleted, the speech's essence, saliva, being scattered, and the mind's essence, abandoning focus and not cutting off conceptual thoughts; avoid these three kinds of things to be protected from being lost. As for the branches, before accomplishment arises, do not move the place, do not shake the cushion, do not mix idle talk with people, offer the torma before it is overdue, do not quarrel, do not let the torma spoil, do not allow dogs, widows, lepers, or disabled people to enter the practice room, avoid the food of all these, do not shave the beard and mustache, do not let others sleep in your bed, do not exchange malas and cushions, do not put down the bow, do not break the arrow, do not put weapons on the tip. In general, when reciting mantras, you must avoid ten faults. It is said that the ten are the five faults of sound: loud, soft, fast, slow, and blowing air. The five obstacles are: coughing, talking, yawning, falling asleep, and distraction. If sleep, yawning, drowsiness, or lower wind occur during recitation, immediately put down the mala, make close contact, rinse your mouth, and the number of mantras recited when such a thing occurred before does not count, because it is defiled and therefore useless. Furthermore, even if it is not mixed with these faults, but these things suddenly occur, deduct from the number previously recited. Deduct four for talking, five for coughing, three for yawning, ten for drowsiness, one for spitting, snot, phlegm, etc., seven for lower wind, and fifteen for sleep.

Therefore, it is said that they are not counted in the number of recitations. Furthermore, during the practice, if mantras of other deities are recited and other religious activities are performed, one should confess with remorse and pray, and then continue the previous recitation. Protecting against obstacles, pacifying illnesses, being lax and careless, physical and mental exhaustion, not restraining oneself, being unclean, bad dreams, and other temporary adverse conditions should be avoided. As mentioned above, not guarding the three boundaries, the number of root base recitations, and replenishing recitations are not counted in the number of recitations, as stated in Lekdrub. Also, if the recitation is done by dividing it in half, reciting half in one place and then moving to another place to recite, or if the recitation exceeds the time, then such recitation does not qualify. Reciting on time means that from the beginning to the end of the practice session, it must be done regularly and consistently, and it is not permissible to arrange the sessions and the amount of recitation according to one's own free time. Furthermore, one should strive to avoid foods that are harmful to mantras, such as garlic, as well as physical and verbal actions such as lying, the shadows of places, companions, and implements, and all obstacles of bad thoughts such as doubt. All these should be diligently avoided. One should apply substances that have been well prepared according to the instructions of Lama Gongdu (Guru's Intent Embodied), such as blessing the speech and applying a razor to the tongue, to different places in each session, each day, or every seven days. One should regularly and clearly recite vowels, believe in the types of seed syllables that generate power, and that the deity and mantra are inseparable. One should diligently practice with unwavering faith, pure vision that recognizes appearances and existence as the great purity of equality, and continuous mindfulness that is not distracted by samadhi. One should pray to the Three Roots for mantra accomplishment and cultivate bodhicitta. One should regularly enhance the glory and power of the mantra through methods of accumulation and purification, and special methods such as fire offerings. If the recitation is performed properly with all the parts of the ritual, it is impossible for the result not to arise when all the conditions are complete. However, if the number of recitations is complete but there are no signs, then one should follow the great sadhana texts such as Terkhyim, Dzongtrang Dorje Tsuklag, and the tantras, as well as the twenty-five instructions on mantra combinations mentioned in Chakshik, and the key points of the instructions in the more detailed Mantra Combination Black Heart Essence.
