A consciousness exists apart from the eight aggregates of consciousness. Even if it does not grasp at self and is not a grasper and grasped, does it grasp at selflessness or is it a non-grasper and grasped? If so, then it must be admitted that all sentient beings have a consciousness that has always realized selflessness and non-grasping. This is unreasonable, because if sentient beings' minds have a mind that has known selflessness from beginningless time, then it should be pure from the beginning. How could it not be liberated? Therefore, it also cannot benefit the mind that has been defiled by delusion. Therefore, it is unreasonable to admit that two minds, liberation and delusion, exist simultaneously in the continuum of one person. If it is said that it does not grasp at self, nor does it grasp at selflessness, then, like a crystal ball, the awareness that does not grasp at anything, empty of grasper and grasped, by its own nature cannot grasp at any grasper and grasped such as self, selflessness, etc. Then, later, the one who grasps at selflessness is the mind of the eight aggregates, and it is able to show liberation. But the valid cognition has not observed the existence of this ninth consciousness that does not act as liberation or delusion, and even if its existence is admitted, no benefit is seen. Applying this reasoning to considering the subtle mind as the innate mind is the same. The coarse mind is liberated by meditating on selflessness. That subtle mind, without grasper and grasped, has it already realized selflessness, or has it not realized it? If it has already realized it, then everything will be liberated from the beginning. If it has not realized it, then emptiness must be newly taught to it. Is it impossible for it to grasp at any grasper and grasped before, or is it possible? If it is impossible, then how is it possible to grasp at selflessness? If it grasps, then what is the difference from the coarse mind, etc. If it is thought that this can refute the existence of the ten powers of wisdom, and the existence of the manifestation of self-grasping, then, although the qualities of the ten powers exist from the beginning, from the point of view of sentient beings, they are not manifest. Even if it is manifest from the point of view of being no different from the dharmata of other Buddhas, nominally, because the continuums are different, this person's obscurations have not been abandoned. From the point of view of dharmata, there is no difference in continuums, and delusion has no object, so it does not go beyond the meaning of realizing what is. And all the dharmas included in what is, and in the way of not realizing it and it.

Knowing is not an obstacle. These are avenues of investigation, not sectarian vows. Is the subtle mind and the gross mind the same entity or different? If they are different, even if one cultivates the subtle mind, it will become the ninth consciousness, different from the eight consciousnesses. If the entities are not different and are the same, since there is no difference in entity between the subtle and the gross, then the gross mind is also the original mind, and the subtle mind is also the gross mind, and the gross mind must also be the subtle mind. If one admits that the gross mind is not the original mind but the subtle mind, it is meaningless. The subtle mind has no conceptual thought, while the gross mind does. If one argues that way, then there is no conceptual thought of grasper and grasped, and two dissimilar types of mind that exist will occur simultaneously, and so on. Even if such a subtle mind, the original mind, is allowed to be continuous, when the gross mind together with the five senses and the six consciousnesses have not ceased, that which is without grasper and grasped exists separately. It is not the nature of the six consciousnesses, but becomes a separate consciousness. Even if such an original mind is manifested, it is of no benefit to realizing the nature of the six or eight consciousnesses, because it is the mind of separate entities. Meditating on emptiness in this way will not be very effective, because emptiness is the realization of the union of appearance and emptiness, where all phenomena appear but are without inherent existence. And union is ultimately meditating on clear light. But for this, the subtle conceptual thought in which no internal or external phenomena appear, this mind of the source of existence that is neither existent nor nonexistent, does not rely on the undefiled path, and is like walking unclearly. If meditating on emptiness with the subtle mind is very effective, then meditating on emptiness based on the peak of existence concentration would be even more effective, but it is not taught that way. Furthermore, this is just the subtle mind. If one thinks that this is the time when the conceptual thoughts of the gross mind, and all the conceptual thoughts represented by the eighty natures of thought, have subsided, then where is the conceptual thought that establishes emptiness through subsequent cognition? That is the domain of the gross mind, and it is impossible here. Even if it is not subsequent cognition that appears in the form of the subject to be proven, the predicate to be proven, the three signs, etc., if one thinks that after emptiness has been established by subsequent cognition, one meditates on emptiness by keeping the true emptiness in mind, then keeping such emptiness in mind
