If one believes that the stream of consciousness ceases, even if the cause of cyclic existence is cut off, there is no reason for the mind to cease permanently like a candle being extinguished. Those who have attained the five uncontaminated aggregates, by the power of temporarily stopping them, cause the manifest cause of mind and mental factors to cease, and also enter the Mahayana path of abandoning the obscurations to knowledge and want to realize Buddhahood, will be accomplished by the power of reality. If that is the case, the nature of the mind is luminosity, and all defilements are adventitious. The meaning of this statement can be explained from the perspective of ultimate emptiness, from the perspective of the nature of conventional mind, and from the perspective of the ultimate reality of the indivisibility of the two truths. The first, the nature of the mind, refers to emptiness without negation, which is empty of truth and not mixed with delusion. What delusion can be mixed into that? Because there is no mind. It is like establishing that wood has no self-grasping. Even if it is established in that way, it does not help the mind itself in any way without being mixed with impurities. Second, both liberation and delusion must be established on the basis of the mind. If the nature or state of the mind is contaminated by delusion, then there is no way to be liberated. However, delusion is established as arising temporarily. If the deluded mind is temporary, then one must admit that there is a basis mind that is not contaminated by temporary delusion. If that is the case, then the school that also admits a ninth consciousness called the immaculate consciousness will arise. However, it is not reasonable for such a consciousness without subject and object to be either different from or not different from the eight consciousnesses, so it is established as non-existent. Therefore, the nature of the mind is said in consideration of the continuum or nature of the mind. For the present deluded minds, there is no need to separately identify one that is not contaminated by delusion. However, the mind that later reverses delusion is not contaminated by delusion. Therefore, in general, it is established without fault that the nature of the mind is not contaminated. In conventional terms, the nature of the mind and the mind are not different entities. If the nature and the possessor of nature are different entities, then it will become a fire without heat. Third, the nature of the mind refers to the natural state or reality, and its ultimate reality is the union of clarity and emptiness, that itself.

Although it is always unmoving from its nature, as if never tainted by delusion, those who are trapped in samsara, clinging to the mind as inherently existent because they have not understood it as such, or those speculative thinkers who believe in mere emptiness, both are refuted. The former is refuted by the wisdom that investigates ultimate truth, and the latter is refuted by the reasoning that investigates the ultimate union. Although there is no delusion in mere emptiness, there is also no liberation. Therefore, such a nature of reality cannot be separated from the aspect of being close to selflessness, which is the nature of the mind. How can it be established that it can be separated from self-grasping? This is unreasonable. However, if the mind is not empty, it cannot be separated from self-grasping. If one thinks that the mind is selfless, and therefore holds onto the aspect of selflessness, that would be acceptable. But the statement that the mind is selfless means that the nature of the mind is selfless. Therefore, the nature and the mind that possesses the nature must be merely opposites, and cannot be different entities. If they are different entities, the mind will not become selfless, because the nature of the mind is selfless, and the two minds are not the same entity. From the perspective of emptiness, because it is non-existent, it cannot be understood as non-existent. From the perspective of appearance, because it exists, it can be understood as existent, and so on. Examples of the nature not being tainted, such as the sky, clear water, and gold, are explained in the differentiation of the nature of reality, etc. If it is in accordance with the first method of proof, it is acceptable, but if it is in accordance with the second, it is not acceptable, because the nature is merely emptiness, and it must exist simultaneously with the arising of that phenomenon. Later, when it is purified, it is still the same emptiness. The examples of muddy water and clear water are suitable as examples of the mind itself, which is the subject of the example. But how can the nature of reality, which is merely emptiness, have two states, a muddy state and an empty state? If it is in accordance with the third method, it is very appropriate. In terms of the actual state, the mind has no room for being tainted at all, so like the sky, its nature is completely pure. However, in terms of appearance, because the actual state is not understood as it is, there may be a delusion of the actual state and appearance being inconsistent, like the sky being obscured by clouds, water becoming muddy, and so on. Later, when the delusion is reversed and the actual state and appearance are consistent, it is like the sky being without clouds, and muddy water becoming clear. But even in the time of clouds and muddiness, the essence is not affected by obscuration or taint. If, as it is believed, there is a stainless consciousness that has not been affected by the taint of grasping and being grasped, then from beginningless time until the end, there is no grasping and being grasped.
