Due to the power of conceptualization of objects, there are arising and ceasing, and purification and defilement, bondage and liberation. Therefore, there is the accumulation of virtuous and non-virtuous actions and the manifestation of their respective results. Furthermore, if all phenomena are like dreams, then the accumulation of actions during the day would also be like actions in a dream, and the path of action would not be completed. Or, if one dreams of killing in a dream, would the path of action be completed as it is during the day? If one asks this, it is not because phenomena themselves have truth or falsehood in terms of whether they are established or not, but rather it depends on the strength of one's own conceptualization and attachment. Because the appearance in a dream can be known to be false when one is awake, even if one dreams of finding treasure there, no one would think that they have actually found treasure. If there were one in a hundred who, without differentiating the appearance in a dream from the appearance during the day, nurtured it with attachment, why would it not complete the basis of the path of action? If it does not complete, then the appearance during the day would also not complete. Moreover, since the sutras say that in both waking and dreaming, actions and mind are independent, one might think that the difference in attachment cannot be established. This is not contradictory, because those principles are made from the perspective of ultimate truth. Also, Shariputra asked Subhuti, "If one meditates on the three doors of liberation in a dream, will prajnaparamita increase?" Subhuti replied, "If it increases when one meditates during the day, why would it not increase at night?" The meaning is that if one enters into meditation without being confused by the realm of consciousness, what difference is there between day and night? Thus, if someone asks, "If one accumulates merit such as generosity in a dream, will it complete the accumulation of merit?" Because Subhuti has already answered in terms of meaning, and because of the need, he turned to Maitreya and said, "This Maitreya is a bodhisattva who will attain enlightenment in one lifetime, so ask him." After asking in this way, did Maitreya answer with the name "What Maitreya?" etc.? After saying this, He showed that samsara and nirvana are not established in meaning, so it is not too extreme. The reason for not directly and completely answering that question is to show that the future Buddha will eliminate the endless wrong conceptualizations in the minds of those to be tamed. Among them, the way in which the previous answer becomes the answer to this question in meaning is: If one gives generosity in a dream, and if it is necessary to complete the accumulation of merit just like generosity during the day, then the objects of generosity in the dream, etc., should also leave traces like when one is awake.

If it also has to be accomplished in the realm of manifest clinging, then it cannot be accomplished. So, does a Bodhisattva not accumulate any karma because he realizes that all daytime appearances are like dreams, without clinging? No, he does not accumulate any contaminated karma, because he has no clinging, so he has no desire for contamination, etc. If it is said that uncontaminated karma is also not accumulated, then there is a fault. Although a Bodhisattva has no clinging, benefiting other sentient beings who have clinging will not change, therefore, by the power of the infallibility of cause and effect, the accumulation of merit of that Bodhisattva will not change. Second, the union of pure lands is: the aspiration to transform the impure vessel and sentient world into purity, and the accomplishment of the accumulation of merit as desired, is the union of pure lands. Here, it is indicated by one verse such as "the path of the world's tranquility". Third, the union of skillful means has two aspects: essence and division. First, that Bodhisattva perfects the Dharma of liberation and the aspects of enlightenment, and for those realms of engaging in benefiting sentient beings, knowing when to act and when not to act, and combining through many different ways of practice, this skillful means is its essence. Although its divisions are immeasurable, there are mainly ten types. Among them, the essence is: the Bodhisattva is indicated by one verse such as "the wisdom of the Victorious One", that is, through the union of emptiness and compassion, perfecting one's own Buddhadharma, and the way of maturing other sentient beings, without hindering each other, but rather helping each other, possessing special characteristics of skillful means. Among the ten divisions, first, the union of transcending the four maras and the two grounds is: for example, it is indicated by three verses such as "the wise person". Second, in order to tame the tamable, exerting its power as in the past aspiration is: "wind relies on the sky" and other two verses. Third, understanding the union of the two truths, not abiding in any extreme is: "when that time" and other two verses. Fourth, although knowing the ultimate truth, not manifesting it, therefore not being common with Hearers and Solitary Realizers is: for example, "arrow training" and other two verses. Fifth, in the form of emptiness, not clinging to self and phenomena is:
