Because there is no attachment. Second, 'Self-conceit' etc., one verse: Those who conceive of self where there is no self in reality, and those who cling to things like the eye as 'mine,' where would foolish people with attachment have the wisdom to abandon like that? They don't. The miser will be reborn in the realm of the hungry ghosts, and even if he is reborn as a human in one of the hundred paths, he will become poor in that life. Third, 'At that time, Bodhi' etc., one verse: Like this, when reborn in samsara, Bodhisattvas, knowing that sentient beings have become poor due to miserliness, cut off the mind of miserliness themselves, delight in the thought of giving, and through action, always generously and without hindrance give away all possessions. Even these four continents, well adorned with arrangements, if left ungiven, will become the nature of impermanence, with no essence to be trusted, like ashes of saliva. Knowing it to be like spittle thrown out, in order to take essence from the meaningless, giving those continents to others, the Bodhisattva will be happy, but if he obtains those continents, he will not be so happy, because the reason has already been explained. Second, how to give? Divided into the main part and the benefits. The first part is divided into three: giving for the benefit of others with compassion, completely dedicating with skillful means, and giving without attachment to maturation and things. First, 'Bodhisattva' etc., three lines: The Bodhisattva, wise and intelligent, even when giving a single morsel of food, with the thought of compassion as a guide, like this, all sentient beings included in the three realms, may they all obtain unobstructed wealth, and the fruits of all who have entered the three vehicles, and may they all obtain the unsurpassed fruit of Buddhahood, thinking like this, he gives. Thus it is said. Second, 'That also for beings' etc., one line: The merit of giving, is also for the benefit of all realms of beings.

I and all sentient beings dedicate this merit towards the attainment of supreme enlightenment. Third, "After giving alms," etc., are two lines. Thus, after a Bodhisattva gives alms, they do not dwell in the mind with expectation, attachment, or clinging to the object of giving or the object of return. Moreover, the Bodhisattva never hopes that the result of that alms will belong to them, because they are not attached to things, including the result, but give for the benefit of sentient beings. Second, the benefits are divided into general and specific. First, "Thus giving," etc., are two lines. As mentioned before, the Bodhisattva who gives in this way, with skillful means and mindfulness, is skilled in giving and gives without attachment to all things, including possessions and their results. In this way, even giving a small object becomes giving countless immeasurable alms, and its result becomes immeasurable as well. Second, the specific benefits are divided into the benefits of giving with skillful means such as compassion, and the benefits of giving without attachment. First, "In the three realms," etc., are three verses. Taking as an example the complete examination of all sentient beings in the three realms, all those sentient beings offer vast alms to the World-Knower, the Buddha Bhagavan, the Hearer Arhats, and the Solitary Realizers for endless eons, and well seek the fruit of the Hearer Bodhi. A Bodhisattva who is skilled in the Great Vehicle and possesses skillful means, in a single moment of completing the action of the mind, rejoices in those objects of merit mentioned before, and then dedicates them to the supreme and perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings. Thus, merely generating a single thought of dedication surpasses the roots of virtue of all beings. For example, even a large pile of accumulated agate can be overwhelmed by a single precious beryl jewel king.

Such power, all the extremely vast collections of generosity of all other beings, are overcome by a Bodhisattva with a single extraordinary thought of rejoicing. Second, if Bodhi, etc., is one verse: If a Bodhisattva gives charity to beings, and does not claim the merit of the charity as his own, and is not stingy with the objects to be given, and gives in such a way that he is extremely unattached, then, what kind of root of virtue will be accumulated and perfected by giving such charity, and what great power to dispel obscurations will increase more and more? The opposite of charity is stinginess due to attachment, but here, attachment is never given a chance, and charity is given by cutting off attachment, so it is like a cloudless, bright moon in the waxing phase. Second, explaining the fruit of the path, there are two types of fruit: the specific fruit of the path and the complete fruit of the path. First, the Bodhisattva's generosity, etc., is shown in sixteen lines or four verses. In this way, all the paths of a Bodhisattva are contained in the six perfections, and therefore, the extensive teachings of the Mahayana and the Perfection of Wisdom are also actually contained therein, and such practices of the six perfections have already been well explained above, and now the fruits of those are explained. The Bodhisattva's generosity cuts off the cycle of rebirth in the realm of hungry ghosts, as well as poverty of resources, and also cuts off all defilements. By giving charity without any object of reference, one abandons all defilements such as stinginess and ignorance, and by giving the Dharma to others, one also cuts off all their defilements. When a Bodhisattva practices generosity, he also obtains infinite, inexhaustible, and increasing resources as he wishes in all lifetimes, and by gathering material and Dharma charity, he fully matures sentient beings who abide in the cause and effect of suffering.
