One verse is: If someone lives for many years in a remote mountain wilderness within a radius of about five hundred yojanas, devoid of human traffic, where there are no people, filled with venomous snakes, and is an uninhabitable place. If that bodhisattva does not understand this true inner solitude, he will become arrogant and mixed with inferior intentions. The reason is that the meaning of solitude is non-mixing. What should not be mixed with? The bodhisattva's continuum should not be mixed with excessive attachment to self and inferior path intentions. If one does not understand such solitude, mere physical solitude will make him arrogant, and he will be negligent in the work of benefiting sentient beings. This is actually mixed with discordant afflictions, so it is not living in solitude. That is its meaning. The second part includes the actual and therefore difficult to measure others. The first part, bodhisattva, etc., one verse is: If a bodhisattva is diligent in benefiting beings, and has attained the samadhi of the four dhyanas, five powers, five faculties, and three doors of liberation, and then wanders in towns and cities, showing various ways to ripen sentient beings. Those who do not understand his profound intentions and conduct will contemptuously say, 'This person is not practicing in monasteries and solitary places.' Such a person is the realm of Mara, and is abiding in a place where Mara can find an opportunity. The Buddha has said this. As stated in the Sutra of the History of the Bhikshu Dharma Speaker's Pure Conduct and the Wisdom of Conduct, which shows that all dharmas are unborn, etc. The second part, if someone is in a town, etc., one verse is: If a bodhisattva's body dwells in a town or monastery, but his mind is separated from the minds of the two vehicles of the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and is definitely on the path of supreme enlightenment. This way is the true solitude of the bodhisattvas who have entered the benefit of beings. If one does not understand this, other bodhisattvas will measure or evaluate the bodhisattva who has this solitude, thinking that this person is not living in solitude.
