Established. All appearances, such as happiness and suffering, self and other, are established as they appear. The appearance itself is the establishment of conventional validity or the completion of the meaning of convention, because there is no reason for the existence of a nature of meaning other than such appearance. If it exists, then the meaning will become its own nature, and the nature of convention will be truly established, thus the fault of speaking of self-nature as a cause will occur, that is, the fault of the reasoning of nature being too extreme will fall. Therefore, as it appears in the Sutra Requested by Nearness, all phenomena are merely established by the power of discrimination. It is only established by the power of appearance in the mind or by the power of discrimination, and there is nothing more than that. All elaborations are distinctions of the mind's appearance. As it is said in the Sutra. If there is no mind, then how are happiness and suffering, heat and cold, etc., established? If it is only established by the power of discrimination, then things will become like fire without its own characteristics, then how can discrimination establish it? Just as fire is not established by the power of discrimination in a place where there is no fire. The meaning of establishing by the power of discrimination here is not that there is no external object in convention, but that the object of cognition is the meaning fabricated by the mind, but only that it appears as an object in the mind by the power of interdependence, and it is the meaning of establishing and fabricating there and there. Then, how can the heat of the object fire be without its own nature in convention? In convention, both the object and the subject exist, but both are established by the power of discrimination, just like the object and subject in a dream. Therefore, the appearance of the heat of fire in the mind is established as heat, not by the power of the object, but because it appears in the mind. If it does not appear as heat in the mind, then it cannot be established as heat, just like a deer has the cleanliness of fire. Then, can't the heat of external fire be established by valid cognition? For those things that have not changed the essence of heat, it is established without deception, just like us. If it is established as heat in all ways, then it will become truly established. If it is necessary that it is not established as not hot for things that have the cleanliness of fire, then it is unreasonable, because fire has various existences such as becoming a dwelling place, becoming food, etc. Therefore, it is established as being established by the power of discrimination, and it is clear that the action of conventional validity has been completed by the unerring appearance. Then, will double moons, hair, illusion, etc. also become established by validity?

Then, by what is it established? If it is said that those established by the power of conceptual thought that grasps at them have performed the function of valid cognition for them, then it is assumed that those that appear to someone have performed their function merely by appearing there. But in conventional terms, the valid establishment of a double moon, hair, illusory horses and cattle, and real horses and cattle does not exist, because they are not the same, and must be distinguished from the perspective of examining the conventional terms themselves. In terms of how they appear, for hair, a false appearance appears as hair; for a double moon, it appears as an eye disorder; for illusory horses and cattle, the appearance of knowing them there is that merely by appearing there, they each become valid cognitions. The delusion or non-delusion of conventional terms is not merely from the aspect of appearance, but is distinguished from the perspective of examining it with the delusion or non-delusion of mental consciousness. Those appearances are not true because they are not established in reality. The mere existence of appearance is not false, and all phenomena are the same. Furthermore, the names that are assigned to the heat of fire, etc., which are established by the power of conceptual thought, are not deceptive to those who have conceptual thought. In the true sense, if we examine the fire that is to be expressed and its characteristic of heat, it is emptiness, so how can there be talk of a nature cause or basis? What is established by the power of conceptual thought is done in the face of that conceptual thought and spoken of in that way, but it is not established by its own nature of meaning, because if we examine it, all phenomena are without characteristics. If it appears to conceptual thought that there are characteristics when there are no characteristics, and if it is said that all phenomena will become without cause because they arise from nothing, then they do not arise from nothing. Just as fire appears to be hot, it is not without characteristics, so how can there be anything that arises from a phenomenon without characteristics? Because it is unborn from the beginning. Therefore, all phenomena, which are the appearance of characteristics, heat, etc., in the face of conceptual thought, are said to be unborn from their own characteristics, or to be unborn from their own nature and nature, because they have no characteristics. For example, it is said that the appearance of a double moon and a rope snake arise without cause, just as a double moon and a snake have never been born. If it is thought that it is impossible to appear to be born if there is no birth, this example can also be used to dispel that. All phenomena should be understood in the same way as this example. Therefore, all phenomena are free from the eight extremes, such as birth and cessation, from the beginning, that is, they do not accept.
