If, as the proponents of the Shentong view in modern monastic colleges assert, emptiness is the emptiness of something real, then, since things like pots are not empty of themselves, no phenomenon that exists conventionally can be the object to be proven empty. Moreover, it is impossible to prove that they are without inherent existence. Therefore, without refuting all of these through analysis of reality, they only refute the truly established that does not exist conventionally. It seems that they are negating by adding the qualification of truly established to the extent that it is refuted by analysis of ultimate reality. In general, there is no contradiction in simply adding the qualification of truly established, and there are times when it is easy to understand. It is acceptable to add the term "without true establishment" to the self-emptiness of the nature of phenomena, but if the self-emptiness of the nature of phenomena is not understood as the meaning of "without truth," but is understood as negating an independent true establishment, then such an emptiness will not negate a single instance of the reification of phenomena, and the need to establish emptiness will be lost. Moreover, the way things are will become a mere non-affirming negation that negates an independent true establishment other than the phenomena themselves. Thus, one will not understand the meaning of the union of appearance and emptiness arising dependently, and one will slander freedom from elaboration, and one will not abandon the elaboration of non-affirming negation. Even if one asserts that the samadhi without grasping is non-apprehending, even if one becomes accustomed to that emptiness that negates independent true establishment for hundreds of eons, it will not be able to eliminate dualistic appearance. Moreover, the reasoning of ultimate reality analysis in the Madhyamaka treatises is able to prevent clinging to reality, but this view is unable to prevent it, and by transforming the object of negation into the single entity of true establishment, the opportunity for the mind that clings to it to realize the emptiness of freedom from elaboration is made distant. Moreover, it becomes a place of hundreds of contradictions that contradict the meaning of pure treatises. The emptiness of the nature of all phenomena, or the unborn nature of reality, is the reason for knowing, such as being free from one and many. It is said that all phenomena are without truth because they are proven to be unanalyzable by these reasons, and that is how it should be understood. If one thinks that even if a phenomenon cannot be analyzed by analysis of reality, it does not prove that it is empty, but that it only makes its true establishment empty, and that true establishment is the object of negation and emptiness is the object to be proven, then all phenomena

It is not the case that everything is to be established as the object of negation without dependence, and as the object of emptiness. If it must be established that only true establishment is non-dependent and empty, then for all phenomena such as pots, without examining them with reasoning such as one or many, even if it is necessary to examine only true establishment, then the true establishment that does not differentiate any phenomena is like a rabbit's horn. If what is expressed by name is only a name, empty of meaning, then how can it be examined by reason as something different from pots and so on? The opponent thinks like this: For example, when a rope is mistaken for a snake, the basis for imputing the snake is the rope. The mind that grasps the rope as a snake grasps the rope itself as a snake, and does not grasp a snake other than the rope. Therefore, when examining whether there is a snake in that basis and realizing that there is none, the rope itself exists, and it is empty of the other phenomenon, the snake. Even though the mind that grasps the rope as a snake has never seen a snake, when examining the mistaken belief in a snake, it is necessary to examine the rope itself and see that there is no snake. And that rope is empty of the other phenomenon, the snake, just as the rope is not empty in itself. If you think that the way pots and so on are empty of true establishment is similar to this, then just as the rope is not empty in itself, if pots and so on are not empty in themselves, then even if you do not accept pots and so on as truly established, by the power of accepting that they are not empty in themselves, they will become truly established. It is also necessary to admit that it can withstand examination and dependence by ultimate analysis. Chandrakirti (the commentator on Nagarjuna's works) said: The fault of conventional truth being able to withstand examination by reason falls into this system. If pots and so on are truly established in their own nature, then how can they be empty of other true establishment? Empty of the true establishment of what? Therefore, this is an irrelevant statement of speaking about emptiness. Just as the snake is removed from the rope, if the rope itself is broken down into threads, the rope itself becomes merely imputed and without substance, and the same is true between hairs and atoms. The consciousness that grasps the rope and its object, the rope, are both not mistaken in convention. Therefore, when establishing emptiness, it is necessary to add the distinction of the rope being truly established, but when establishing that there is no snake in the rope, it is not necessary to add the distinction of the snake being truly established. In this way, without adding the distinction of true establishment, the pot...
