If it is said to be self-empty, because it is established by the power of reality, it is not enough to say emptiness only to that extent. Emptiness means being empty of true establishment, not the self-emptiness of conventional truth. This not only does not have a further understanding than the former, but also the extreme true establishment that is more than what was said above, does not appear to anyone in the world, nor is there attachment to it. Like this, it is meaningless to establish emptiness with such discriminations by speculating with one's own thoughts. The world only grasps the pot itself, and it is impossible to grasp the true establishment other than the pot. If the pot itself is not empty, then even if the basis of grasping that is not the pot is empty, it will not be established as a mere illusion, just as a rope will not be mistaken for an illusion without a snake. Therefore, the two, conventional and ultimate, are not contradictory, and it should be understood that this is how the self-nature of nominal dharmas appears. In short, if one clings to these dharmas, such as the aggregates of all sentient beings, which exist nominally, as being existent by nature or self-nature, or as being truly established as they appear, then various grasping and clinging discriminations of self, dharma, inner and outer, etc., will arise in a continuous stream, and one will wander in samsara. The nirvana of the three vehicles is: realizing the selflessness of the person, abandoning the afflictive obscurations, and thus manifesting the fruit of the Hearer who is liberated from the suffering of samsara; realizing that the self of the person and the side of the grasped form are without truth, thus obtaining the fruit of the Solitary Realizer; and abandoning the two obscurations with the wisdom of realizing the two selflessnesses, obtaining the non-abiding nirvana of the Bodhisattva vehicle. In general, if one realizes that the object of grasping of whatever dharma is grasped does not exist, then grasping will cease. Otherwise, grasping will never cease. As the noble Deva said, "Seeing the absence of reality in objects," and so on. The way to see selflessness is also as just explained. What should be the object of investigation of the ultimate truth and established as emptiness are these dharmas that exist nominally. As for things that do not exist nominally, such as rabbit horns, there is no need to refute them with reason, because no one in the world will generate self-grasping, etc., by taking them as a condition.

Therefore, when examining things like a vase with the reasoning of one or many separate entities, since the conventional vase itself cannot be examined, it is necessary to examine whether the vase itself is empty of its own nature. Because the emptiness to be established by that reasoning is the vase itself, and it must be established without observing the vase itself. If this is not established, then the non-inherent existence of the vase will not be established. Therefore, ordinary beings first take the vase as the basis for imputing true existence to it, rather than taking the true existence on top of the vase as the basis for believing it to be true. This is because true existence cannot be directly perceived by eye consciousness, etc., because it is a mistaken assumption or a completely fabricated concept. Therefore, what is to be refuted by ultimate analysis is these phenomena that exist in name, these nominal phenomena such as vases appear in this way due to the power of dependent origination, which is undeniably true. However, one wonders whether this appearance is established as its own essence or not. If one examines it with the four logical arguments of the ultimate analysis of Madhyamaka, then just as vases and other things appear, even a tiny particle cannot be found to be examinable as its own characteristic. The phenomena such as vases are not empty of other conditions, but one must ascertain that they abide in emptiness, which by their own nature or state has no origin or is not observable from the beginning. In this way, that which is empty from its own side is called the absence of self-nature of phenomena, because when examined with the reasoning of ultimate analysis, its essence cannot be observed, hence it is named so. It is called absence of inherent existence, because it is impossible to pinpoint this as its inherent existence. It is indicated by names such as absence of characteristics, absence of aspirations, likewise absence of signs, emptiness, selflessness, ultimate reality, and the sphere of reality. Furthermore, another term for it is absence of true establishment, because when vases and other things are examined by the reasoning of ultimate analysis, if they can be examined, they must be truly established. However, among conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, there is no phenomenon that can be examined by the reasoning of ultimate analysis. From this perspective, it is called absence of true establishment. Therefore, vases and other things are not non-empty from their own side, but other true
