Since it cannot be prevented, merely acknowledging the absence of truth cannot eliminate any elaboration. Since one cannot newly understand any ultimate truth beyond the mere state of conventional terminology, and one cannot newly understand any ultimate truth through rational analysis, then there is no need to teach such emptiness, because what does not exist in convention has already been established by the conventional analysts. In short, saying that there is no true establishment in any dharma is a means of understanding the absence in the ultimate truth, but the absence in the ultimate truth does not necessarily mean that it must also be absent in the conventional truth. Such a way of combining statements is good. There is no contradiction for oneself or others to say it that way. But after thinking about its expression, from the conventional pot and so on, one understands another object to be refuted, and thus acknowledges the pot as other-empty. Not understanding that the meaning of the emptiness of persons is an acknowledgment allowed by rational analysis. If persons are empty, then a new understanding arises that persons do not exist in convention, and acknowledging that as other-empty, although it seems very good in its view, it becomes a contradiction between the two truths. The self-nature of the conventional is not empty, and ultimately becomes the point that true establishment is also not empty, not understanding this point. By acknowledging the absence of truth, how can it become the absence of truth? Like this, satisfying one's mind with the tenets of words, the Svātantrika will say this. If one clings to self and phenomena, due to various grasping and apprehended objects, afflictive and cognitive obscurations will arise. If one wants to eliminate these, one must analyze and understand that their objects, self and phenomena, do not exist, thereby eliminating self-grasping and phenomena-grasping. Then, merely clinging to the self and phenomena to be eliminated is not self-grasping, but because clinging to self and phenomena as truly existent, obscurations arise, and true establishment is the object to be refuted. Śāntideva said: Self and phenomena are the objects to be refuted. Because he did not say that, if one eliminates self and phenomena, it will become nihilism, if one thinks like that, then, the so-called true establishment does not mean that self and phenomena are not empty, emptiness and absence of truth are not the same meaning but only different names. If you think like that, self and phenomena are not empty, but empty of true establishment, then sentient beings will also focus on their own five aggregates that exist in convention, clinging to this as me, and that is the co-emergent self-grasping.

Isn't it? Happiness and so on are guided. Similarly, the thought that "this is a vase" is clinging to the Dharma. Just because things are clung to there, one thinks "I" or "Dharma," and just this kind of conceptualization will generate afflictions, accumulate karma, and experience suffering. If you don't stop it, then something else that is truly existent, different from this, will not generate afflictions, will not accumulate karma, and like a rabbit's horn, there is no name, why deny it? Similarly, in the case of the twenty emptinesses, the six internal sources of eyes and so on are internal, the six external are external, and similarly, just because everything else is understood as that and that, attachment to that and that's own nature will arise. In this way, attachment to all dharmas will arise, and if you don't prove that its object is emptiness, but prove that it is not empty, then even if you know the twenty emptinesses of external true existence, internal true existence, etc., it will not prevent clinging to internal dharmas, etc. Therefore, the inner and outer and both inner and outer, the great and emptiness, etc., are said to be unnecessary for the purpose of reversing the attachment to that and that, because that kind of emptiness cannot reverse a single kind of attachment. As the sutra says, "As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self." According to this, if the five aggregates of worldly names are not empty by themselves, then the clinging to the aggregates will not cease, which is obvious. Just because of clinging to the aggregates of the inner continuum, self-clinging will arise, which is also obvious. If you think how self-clinging will cease, the five aggregates are empty of other truly existent things, so there is no fault, then, for the things that the five aggregates are not empty of their own nature, clinging to self-clinging, even if empty of other dharmas, cannot harm the clinging to the aggregates at all, just as a vase is empty of cloth, it cannot help the vase's own nature to be empty at all. Therefore, if you think that there is no difference between the meaning of "aggregates are empty of their own nature" and "no reality," then there is no contradiction in saying that there is no true existence. If there is a difference, that is, the five aggregates are not empty from their own side, but are clinging to being empty of other truly existent things, then no matter how accustomed you are to that kind of emptiness, the clinging to the aggregates will not cease. Therefore, the vase, the dharma, is empty of true existence, because of the true single
