And, establishing as the thesis the absence of unimpeded substantial power of cold touch, the absence of cold-fruit pore action, and the absence of snow touch, the sequence is: the reasonings that focus on the nature, cause, effect, pervasion, and contradictory nature. Again, with the subject of debate as before, establishing the pervasion by the violently rising smoke as the reason, the negation of the above four, such as cold touch, is the focusing on the effect contradictory to the nature, and so on. Again, with the subject of debate being the same, establishing the pervasion by the fire of sandalwood as the reason, the negation of the four, such as cold touch, is the fourfold focusing on the pervasion contradictory to the nature, and so on. Furthermore, some Tibetan scholars, taking the unimpeded substantial power of fire as the reason, and adding the negation of the four as before, consider there to be sixteen forms of contradictory focus. Other scholars strongly refuted this, saying that the substance of fire is not fire, but rather a moment that has not yet produced an actual result, and therefore cannot be definitively established as a reason. However, generally speaking, because the substantial power of fire is strong, and there is no substance of cold touch, the other three also disappear, so although such a formulation only has a lack of contradiction in meaning, it is easier to understand to consider twelve formulations as before, so this is how it will be taken here. From the perspective of mutual exclusion and contradiction, there is no reason or thesis of contradictory focus in actual contradiction, because it would become the same meaning. For example, "Sound is a phenomenon, it is impermanent, because it is produced or arises from effort." From the perspective of establishing the pervasion of indirect contradiction, negating the contradictory of the pervader is also called contradiction by valid cognition. Although the mere term of non-apprehension is acceptable from the aspect of excluding contradiction, if one considers from the aspect of completely excluding permanence and establishing impermanence, then all non-apprehensions can be included as reasons of nature. Furthermore, mental contradictions and so on can also be indicated by this and included in its category, but in reality, it is not made a category of reason because it is difficult for ordinary people to ascertain, like the unimpeded substantial power. The logic of the completeness of the collection of causes is also included in nature, and so on. Other formulations of the three types of reasons should also be included in these three, namely the logic of one and many separations.

Just like not finding the pervasive existence of truth, etc. In this way, understanding the truth of things as they are through the means of correct reasoning is self-benefiting inference. Relying on it, also reasonably proving the truth of things to others, and refuting statements that do not conform to the truth, is called other-benefiting inference. When refuting the opponent's view, the basis of the argument is: that which is recognized by valid cognition and has not been negated, is taken as the basis for inference. For example, fire is hot, which has already been recognized by valid cognition in front of both debaters. But fire is cold, like this, which has already been negated by valid cognition, cannot be used as the basis for argument. Like sound is permanent or impermanent, due to holding different views, it is taken as the basis for inference. In this case, the reason for the argument can be established. Moreover, when arguing, it is necessary to use a self-sustaining argument that possesses three characteristics, that is, the reason and pervasion must be recognized by valid cognition, and mere commitment cannot be established. For refutation, there are both self-sustaining and consequential ways. In order to refute the non-Buddhist who believes that sound is permanent, a self-sustaining argument can be established like, "Sound is impermanent, because it is produced." To that debater, it can be said, "Sound, the subject, should be unmade, because it is permanent," in this way, it is also possible to derive an undesirable conclusion by establishing a reason through commitment. Therefore, from the way that the reason and pervasion are recognized by valid cognition or established through commitment, various kinds of consequential arguments will arise. If you want to argue with others through clear speech, you must be proficient in asking and answering, as well as distinguishing and summarizing, etc., understand the meaning of the words to be expressed by the tenets of yourself and others, and possess fearless courage, exquisite words, clear expression, abandon unnecessary words such as bad words, and put forward necessary arguments, possessing the adornment of speech. In places such as the king, lama, or market, the arbiter or witness of speech, who can distinguish between truth and falsehood, and can truly judge victory and defeat, the basis of the argument is, the correct teachings purified by the three, perception, inference, and valid cognition, that is, completely combining the argument with the three valid cognitions and examples, and expressing it exquisitely, thereby completely establishing the meaning of the commitment.
