It is like understanding in this way. Inferential valid cognition of conventional truth is like inferring fire from smoke and impermanence from conditioned phenomena. Inferential valid cognition of ultimate truth is like inferring emptiness by reasoning such as being free from one or many. How many types of direct perception are there? There are four: The consciousness that arises dependent on the physical sense faculties as its cooperative condition, and is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous, is sense direct perception, namely, the five non-erroneous sense consciousnesses such as eye consciousness. The appearance of one moon as two due to the sense faculties being corrupted by error, etc., is apparent direct perception, not a valid cognition. The consciousness that arises dependent on the mental faculty as its cooperative condition, and is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous, is mental direct perception itself. The non-conceptual mind that follows the erroneous sense faculties, and appearances in dreams, etc., are not valid cognitions. The consciousness that arises dependent on the yoga of calm abiding and special insight as its cooperative condition, and is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous, is yogic direct perception. The clear appearance of a skeleton after becoming accustomed to ugliness, etc., is not considered valid cognition because it is not non-erroneous. Yogic direct perception can understand the meaning of obscuring and cutting off conventional objects, etc., which is called direct perception with appearance; like seeing selflessness, this is called yogic direct perception without appearance. All minds and mental factors, with their own nature of self-luminosity, self-aware in a way that is free from conceptualization and non-erroneous, is self-aware direct perception. Whatever consciousness arises, whether erroneous or non-erroneous, it is non-erroneous and free from conceptualization merely because it experiences itself as self-luminous. The objects of these four direct perceptions are such that object, time, and aspect are not mixed, and because self-characteristics appear, there is no conceptual thought that mixes sound and meaning. In general, if these worldly direct perceptions did not exist, then the signs, which are the basis of what is perceived by non-erroneous consciousness, would also cease to exist. Because the arising of effects from causes and the cessation of those causes, etc., would not exist, the emptiness of the nature of those appearances would also not be understood. Therefore, as it is said: Without relying on the conventional, the ultimate cannot be realized. That is the meaning. Specifically, without sense direct perception, the meaning of forms, etc., would not be seen; without mental direct perception,
