Forgetting is forgetting due to the unclear focus on the object of concentration. It is the wrong mindfulness that corresponds to the afflictions that are contrary to mindfulness, and it is the basis for distraction. Non-alertness is the wisdom of distraction that corresponds to afflictions. It is not acting with alertness in the actions of the three doors (body, speech, and mind), but letting them go naturally, which is the basis for the occurrence of downfall. Drowsiness is part of ignorance. With the state of heaviness of body and mind, one cannot engage with the object, but withdraws inward, and the mind is not workable, which is the basis of afflictions. Excitement is part of the desire that follows the signs of suffering. The mind scatters to external objects, making it unworkable and unpacified, which is an obstacle to calm abiding. Distraction is part of the three poisons. The mind moves and wanders to external objects, making it impossible to focus on a virtuous object. There are distinctions such as external distraction, internal distraction, and sign distraction. Thus, these twenty are part of the root afflictions and are close to them, so they are called near afflictions. Among the four variable factors, sleep is dependent on the cause of sleep. Without distinguishing between good and bad, similar and dissimilar, time and non-time, it gathers the five consciousnesses inward. It is part of ignorance and is the basis for losing affairs. Regret is the remorse with a displeased state of mind about what was done before, which is an obstacle to the mind's abiding. Conceptualization is the mental verbalization that relies on attention and wisdom to seek all objects of focus. It grasps the rough general meaning, with a coarse appearance, like not distinguishing between a bowl and a vase for a distant object, but only grasping that much. Analysis is the mental examination that relies on attention and wisdom to distinguish the differences of that object, with a subtle appearance, like grasping a new, unbroken vase. These can be transformed into good, bad, or neutral depending on the difference in motivation and intention, so they are called the four variable factors. These mental factors are generally said to be the main factors that distinguish the many categories of mind and the differences between virtuous and non-virtuous mental factors. In addition, from the differences in the way of grasping of mind and perception, there are aversion and non-aversion,

Easy and difficult, patience and impatience, etc., know that they will turn into very many kinds. These are the formations that are in accordance with the mind. Although it is not a formation like mind-born, it must belong to the conditioned phenomena. For a phenomenon that is not suitable to be classified as either form or consciousness, it is called a phenomenon of formation that is not in accordance with the mind. Thus, know that all conditioned phenomena are covered by the three: form, consciousness, and non-association. What is composed of particles is form. What is clear and conscious is consciousness. All conditioned phenomena that are not these two are non-associated formations. What are non-associated formations? For any dharma of virtue, non-virtue, or neutrality in one's own continuum, which was previously non-existent and newly acquired, and for the continuous existence of that acquired dharma, it is called acquisition. Because it is a dharma belonging to the continuum and is also a conditioned phenomenon, it is called a non-associated formation. Similarly, for virtue, etc., which has deteriorated and diminished from the state of acquisition in one's own continuum, it is called non-acquisition. The dharma that is born into the respective classes of sentient beings and has equal destiny is called homogeneity or similarity of class. The absorption of non-perception is when someone who has abandoned the desire for the increase of virtue, but has not abandoned the desire for the higher realms, temporarily stops the continuous arising of the six consciousnesses, which are not stable in mind and mental factors, through the means of attention. Such a state of cessation of mind and mental factors is newly acquired by the power of absorption, and again arises and ceases from that state, so there is arising and ceasing, but that is not any dharma of form or consciousness, so it is established as a non-associated formation. Similarly, the non-percipient being born in the realm of non-perception, propelled by that absorption, and the cessation absorption, which transcends the mind of the peak of existence, with the consciousness of selflessness and quiescence as the precursor, stops the unstable mental factors, and some of the stable mental factors, namely the mental factors included in afflicted mind. When these three are established as non-associated formations, it must be understood as the power to stop the mind and mental factors. The stable Alaya consciousness is not stopped by the non-percipient being and the cessation absorption, so by its power, the mind can still arise again.

The power of life is the definite time that sentient beings, according to their respective karmas, can abide, which is called life. Birth is the arising of conditioned phenomena from non-existence to existence. Abiding is the continuation of that. Aging is the transformation of the continuum into something else. Impermanence is the destruction of the continuum; these four are called the four characteristics that define conditioned phenomena. The collection of names refers to symbols that merely express the essence of things, such as pillars and vases. The collection of sentences refers to words that combine and show the essence and characteristics of things. The collection of letters refers to the letters that form the basis of names and sentences, such as A. Even when these three are summarized by sound, they are different from mere sound. They are endowed with the symbols of the mind and have the ability to indicate what is expressed, etc., and belong to conditioned phenomena. In the Abhidharmakosha, only these fourteen are mentioned. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, in addition to the previous fourteen, it adds: Ordinary beings are those who have not attained the Dharma of the noble ones. This is a distinction of individuals attributed to those who possess matter and consciousness. Entering is the continuous entry of cause and effect without interruption. Separate determination is that cause and effect are different. Corresponding connection is that cause and effect are mutually consistent. Swiftness is that cause and effect arise quickly. Order is that cause and effect arise one by one in sequence. Time is the duration of the continuous arising of cause and effect. Place is attributed to the existence of cause and effect in all ten directions. Number is the counting and setting of each different conditioned phenomenon. Collection is the state of the aggregation of the conditions of cause and effect. It should be understood that, represented by these twenty-four, all phenomena attributed to the state of matter and consciousness must be included in conditioned phenomena, and it should be known that there are many phenomena that are not suitable to be included in either matter or consciousness. The aggregate of consciousness is that which individually recognizes the essence of all phenomena. Classifying it, there are the six consciousnesses from eye consciousness to mind consciousness, that is, the wisdom that arises relying on the eye faculty and is able to recognize forms, up to the wisdom that arises relying on the mind faculty and is able to recognize self-
