This is obscuration. The eight activities that abandon these five (faults) are: the aspiration for effort, and the faith that is the cause of aspiration, the effort that abides in aspiration, and the result of effort is pliancy, thus faith, aspiration, effort, and pliancy are the four that abandon laziness. By not forgetting the object, mindfulness abandons forgetting the instructions. When vigilance realizes that sinking and excitement have arisen, the mind then manifestly applies the antidote to these two, thereby abandoning the fault of not applying the antidote to these two. When sinking and excitement are pacified by equanimity, one abandons applying the antidote and abides in reality. How to accomplish that calm abiding is the nine ways of abiding of the mind: directing the mind to the object is placing, maintaining its continuity is continuous placing, if forgotten and distracted, then taking back the object and placing it again, having placed it in this way, the mind is gathered inward towards the object more and more from above, which is close placing, then thinking about the qualities of samadhi and taming the mind with joy in samadhi, then seeing distraction as a fault and pacifying displeasure with samadhi, then completely pacifying the arising of the near afflictions of the cause of distraction, such as greed, sleep, and displeasure, then obtaining abiding accompanied by manifest activity is making it one-pointed, then obtaining natural abiding on the object without the need for diligent manifest activity is equal placing. These are accomplished by the six powers: the power of hearing the instructions accomplishes placing, thinking accomplishes continuous placing, mindfulness accomplishes taking back placing and close placing, if distracted then gather, and by familiarizing with that, non-distraction arises. The power of vigilance accomplishes taming, pacifying, and completely pacifying the three, thereby rejoicing with vigilance, and knowing the faults of distraction by the power of conceptual thought and near afflictions, one does not give in to distraction. Diligence accomplishes complete pacifying and one-pointedness, the two, even if subtle conceptual thoughts and near afflictions arise, one abandons them and does not accept them. The last abiding of the mind, which is the continuous arising of samadhi that cannot be interrupted by sinking and excitement, is obtained by the power of complete familiarity. These are the stages of the four mental engagements.

In short, in the first two ways of settling the mind, one should enter with attentive application. From the third to the fifth, because one cannot maintain it for long due to being interrupted by sinking and excitement, one should enter with intermittent application. In the eighth, if one does not let go of effort, one cannot prevent the obstacles of sinking and excitement, so one should enter with uninterrupted application that can maintain the session for a long time. In the ninth, because one continuously enters effortlessly, it is called application of entering without effort. Obtaining the ninth settling of the mind is called one-pointedness of desire. By becoming accustomed to this state, one can use body and mind at will, and a pliancy arises with an aspect of bliss. That pliancy is initially coarse, and gradually its strength diminishes. Like a shadow, a very subtle pliancy arises that is in accordance with the actual basis of unwavering samadhi, and that is called calm abiding. Then, through application of the aspect of calm and coarse, one accomplishes worldly meditative forms such as the actual basis of samadhi of the first dhyana. And relying on calm abiding and the samadhi of meditative forms, one accomplishes the path of transcendence with the aspect of truth. The opposing factor of calm abiding is distraction. Distraction by its own nature is the five consciousnesses that look outward, that is, the conceptual consciousness that arises in conjunction with them, which causes one to rise from samadhi. The mind-consciousness scattering to other external objects is external distraction. Tasting the flavor of samadhi and sinking and excitement are internal distractions. Holding onto characteristics because of trusting in samadhi is distraction of characteristics, so one should abandon these and accomplish samadhi where the mind-consciousness abides in one-pointedness. Furthermore, holding oneself as superior to others through self-grasping is distraction of bad states. Mixing with the application of the lesser vehicle is distraction of a small mind, so one should abandon these six distractions and accomplish the calm abiding of the Great Vehicle that is not distracted. Insight is relying on calm abiding, with the wisdom that distinguishes dharmas, one sees the meaning of as it is and as many as there are without error, through distinguishing the general and particular characteristics, essence, and differences. The mind generation endowed with calm abiding and insight is like a vehicle, and relying on this, one can go to any place of meaning that one desires.
