In short, those who do not enjoy themselves are solely devoted to attaining the state of peace, thus their lineage and aspirations are narrow. Their path is called their vehicle, which is based on abiding in discipline and combining it with the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating. Having few desires, being content, not being attached, and abiding in the lineage of the noble ones, they cultivate the path with both physical detachment from busyness and mental detachment from conceptualization. Initially, if attachment is strong, they contemplate ugliness; if conceptualization is strong, they merely focus on the in and out breaths, setting purification as the primary goal. Once calm abiding is achieved, they cultivate the four mindfulnesses. They contemplate that these objects, such as the body, lack the essence of a self, that all phenomena are empty of a self, and that they are impermanent and suffering. Thus, from above, the four right abandonments and so forth arise, and they traverse the paths of accumulation and preparation. On the path of seeing, they directly see the meaning of the four truths, with the absence of self as the main focus. On the nine grounds of the path of cultivation, they gradually abandon the afflictions, abandoning all the afflictions that bind to the three realms, thus completely turning away from samsara. In short, by cultivating the thirty-seven factors of enlightenment on their own path in the five paths, they temporarily attain the fruits of stream-enterer and the other three fruits, and ultimately manifest the state of arhat. In these paths of learning and no-more-learning, ten knowledges arise: knowledge of the Dharma, knowledge of analogy, conventional knowledge, knowledge of others' minds, the four knowledges of suffering, and so forth, as well as knowledge of exhaustion and knowledge of non-arising. Among these, knowledge of the Dharma is knowing the suffering and origin of the desire realm, knowledge of analogy is knowing the suffering and origin of the upper two realms, knowledge of the contaminated, etc., knowing what, all the other nine that are not are conventional knowledge, knowledge of others' minds is knowing the minds of others, the cessation and so forth knowing the four truths, and knowledge of exhaustion and non-arising are as explained above. By the power of these knowledges, other qualities and distinctions also arise. These ten knowledges, the Buddha possesses superior qualities. The vehicle of the solitary realizer is, by the power of previous habituation, in the last existence, understanding the faults and merits of samsara and nirvana.

Without relying on other teachings, one generates renunciation from samsara, goes to cemeteries and other places, and upon seeing the bones of the dead, thinks, "This is aging and death," and "The cause of this is birth," etc., understanding the principles of arising and ceasing of dependent origination, thereby realizing the Dharma nature of the Four Noble Truths. With the wisdom and samadhi that perfect the two aspects of selflessness—the selflessness of persons and the realization that all phenomena, including form, which are grasped from the Dharma, are without inherent existence—one abandons all attachments to the three realms. Disliking commotion, one teaches the Dharma with a silent body, displays various miraculous powers, and thereby manifests the fruit of a Pratyekabuddha Arhat. The Mahayana path: Any individual who, due to the power of the Mahayana lineage, possesses vast intention and faith, generates the mind of unsurpassed perfect enlightenment for the benefit of all sentient beings, and desires to enter the ocean-like practice of complete maturation and purification over countless eons, then, the vehicle of the path to be practiced is: the profoundness of fully realizing the two selflessnesses, and the vastness of entering the immeasurable realms of practice such as the grounds, paths, and perfections. Thus, by accomplishing the union of profound wisdom and vast skillful means, without regarding samsara and nirvana as faults and virtues, but knowing them as equal, one will surely be liberated from the non-abiding nirvana. Therefore, one should enter such a supreme path. The Great Vehicle is superior to the Lesser Vehicle by seven greatnesses, such as: the greatness of object, aiming at the immeasurable Bodhisattva Pitaka and understanding all the profound and vast meanings; the greatness of practice, accomplishing the benefit of oneself and all other sentient beings; the greatness of wisdom, through the power of the complete realization of the two selflessnesses, attaining the non-conceptual union of emptiness and compassion, each being personally realized; the greatness of diligence, entering the complete maturation and purification of three countless eons, etc.; the greatness of skillful means, by learning the path of non-abiding in samsara and nirvana, not abandoning all sentient beings, and one's own practice.
