By meditating on the aspects of tranquility and roughness, the antidote to the subtle of the subtle afflictions of the desire realm arises in the mindstream. The ultimate result of the path of application, which is attention, is the attention of experiencing the fruits of all those meditations after meditating on that path above. Thus, from the second dhyana to the peak of existence, one cultivates with the seven attentions by looking at the aspects of tranquility and roughness. Among them, the first two attentions are the path of application of one's own path. The three, namely, extreme seclusion, joy, gathering, and the end of application, are the path of no interval. Investigation is the path of distinction. The attention of the result of application is the path of liberation. The three, namely, extreme seclusion, joy, gathering, and the end of application, are the three paths of small, medium, and large, which are respectively the antidotes to the three afflictions of large, medium, and small. Having abandoned the afflictions of the lower grounds, one obtains the actual mind of one's own ground. The first dhyana has five branches: conceptualization, investigation, joy, bliss, and one-pointedness of mind. Among them, conceptualization and investigation are the branches of antidote that abandon the mind of the desire realm, such as desire, hatred, harm, and so on. The mental joy born from solitude by abandoning the opposing side, and the physical bliss born from the power of pliancy, are the branches of benefit. The samadhi that accomplishes these two by the power of one-pointedness of mind is the branch of place or support. Similarly, the second has four branches: conviction is the antidote that abandons conceptualization and investigation, and it is the conviction that arises from the faults of the lower ground and arises in one's own ground. Benefit is joy and bliss. The place is samadhi, these are the four. The third has five branches: equanimity of action, mindfulness of not forgetting meditation, and the three of awareness that abides in mindfulness are the antidotes that abandon the joy of the lower ground. Bliss is benefit. The mind abiding completely is nature or support. The fourth has four branches: the complete purification of mindfulness that is free from the eight faults of the lower ground, and the complete purification of equanimity of action, are the antidotes that abandon the bliss of the third dhyana. Feeling equanimity is benefit. The complete purification of samadhi is the branch of support. The eight faults are the two of conceptualization and investigation that are present in the first dhyana, and the two of exhalation and inhalation that are present from the third dhyana downwards, and the suffering and displeasure that are present in the desire realm.
