In particular, by pride, one knows the faults of the view of the perishable aggregate; by ignorance, one knows the basis of that view of the perishable aggregate; by view, one knows the manifestation of cutting it off; by superior understanding, one knows the correct path; by doubt, one knows the qualities of the Three Jewels; by jealousy, one knows the faults of gain and honor; by stinginess, one is obscured from fully knowing the stinginess of possessions, and does not engage in virtue and engages in non-virtue, thus constantly binding one to samsara, which is called the obscuration of afflictions. Furthermore, the five fetters corresponding to the lower part are: the view of the perishable aggregate, the adherence to ethics and vows, doubt, desire, and malice. These exist only in the continuum of the desire realm, the lowest of the three realms. The two, desire and malice, do not transcend desire. If the remaining three are not abandoned, then even if one abandons the desire realm once, one will regress. It is said that if these five are abandoned, one will become a non-returner. Furthermore, it is said that by abandoning the three fetters of the view of the perishable aggregate, adherence to ethics and vows, and doubt, one becomes a stream-enterer. Although there are also things to be abandoned by a stream-enterer who is not like that, these three are like fetters that hinder one from wanting to go on the path, from going on the wrong path, and from having doubts about the path. Therefore, if these three are mainly abandoned, it is implied that others will also be abandoned. Furthermore, it is said that by abandoning the five fetters corresponding to the upper part, one becomes an arhat, a noble one. These are the desire for form, the desire for the formless, agitation, ignorance, and the five types of pride. In addition, there are six defilements of afflictions: deceit, trickery, arrogance, resentment, holding grudges, and harming. Whichever continuum these exist in, they also make it a defilement. Furthermore, there are seven predispositions: the predisposition of desire for desire, the predisposition of anger, the predisposition of desire for existence, and likewise the predispositions of pride, ignorance, view, and doubt. These are called predispositions in their respective adverse circumstances. That is, if one does not abandon seeking desire, the predispositions of desire and anger will increase. If one does not abandon seeking existence, the predisposition of desire for existence will increase. Perverted

Because of not abandoning the search for pure conduct, the habits of pride, ignorance, wrong views, and doubt will increase, and even with only a little bit of antidote, one will feel satisfied. Being ignorant of the truth, one will contemplate wrong liberation and the methods of liberation, and one will have doubts about the Buddha's teachings. The eight pervasive entanglements are: drowsiness, sleep, agitation, regret, jealousy, stinginess, shamelessness, and lack of embarrassment. These repeatedly entangle the mind even during quiescence and equanimity, so it is said. Furthermore, the four rivers are: the river of desire, which is engaging in the search for desire or the afflictions of desire; the river of existence, which is the affliction of the upper realms; the river of views; and the river of ignorance. Similarly, these four are also referred to as the four attachments to desire, etc. The four clingings are: clinging to desire, similarly, clinging to views, clinging to ethics and vows, and clinging to the assertion of self. The first is because of particularly clinging to desire, leading to arguments with householders and clinging to existence. The second is because of clinging to views, leading to arguments with renunciates, etc. The third is because of different wrong ethics and asceticism, leading to mutual arguments among non-Buddhists. The fourth is because of clinging to the place of views, i.e., the view of the perishable aggregate, leading to arguments with those who speak of no-self, etc. The four knots are: greed, malice, clinging to ethics and vows, considering "this is true" and holding it as supreme and strongly clinging to it. At the end of each, adding "knot of the body," these four are called knots because they obstruct the body of the nature of mind in equanimity. Like this, the four causes of distraction are: being distracted by a little bit of confusion, similarly, the cause of not being able to debate well, suffering from intense ethics and asceticism, and causing the mind to be distracted by improperly thinking about what is to be known. The five obscurations are: longing for desire, malice, drowsiness and sleep, agitation and regret, and the obscuration of doubt. These, according to the order above, when wanting to renounce, when striving to exert effort, during quiescence, when strongly holding the mind, and during equanimity, will not enter the side of virtue.
