It is like obtaining similarity in the same way as armies, etc. If one rejoices in either virtue or vice, it is like obtaining the status of the author. If one regrets, both virtue and vice will be exhausted. If one is skillful, even great sins can be quickly purified, and even small roots of virtue can increase immeasurably. One should understand these principles. Like this, the karma that accomplishes birth in samsara, First, it arises from the power of afflictions. Ultimately, if it is not nourished by afflictions such as craving, it will not produce the fruit of birth. Therefore, afflictions are like water where dragons dwell, like the roots of trees that grow, like the seeds of sprouts that grow, like the trees that produce fruits, they are the cause of the arising of samsara. Among these, by seeking all times, places, and things, they universally exist, delighting in and clinging to existence. Afflictions with existence as the main focus are said to be the Dharma of arising. The classification of afflictions is as it is said, either six or ten types. These arise from subtle places and cause them to grow, so they are also called subtle-increasing. The causes for these afflictions to arise are: not abandoning the latent predispositions of afflictions, the place where afflictions arise is nearby, and improper attention. These three together will cause them to arise. The function of these afflictions is to make the mind stream extremely unpeaceful. Moreover, what causes leakage in samsara is afflictions. These afflictions mutually adapt and gain a position through either the object of focus or association, and Dharmas that can be increased are called contaminated. So, what are they? The Truth of the Path and the Unconditioned are uncontaminated, and all other conditioned Dharmas besides these are contaminated. Then, how does the object of focus cause it to increase? By focusing on the five aggregates, clinging to self and what belongs to self, therefore, the root afflictions and secondary afflictions will increase. Although there is only the object of focus such as viewing the Path, Cessation, and the Unconditioned, they do not increase based on these, because the Path and Cessation are the antidote to the contaminated, so there is no desire or attachment to them. When the Path manifests, it abandons afflictions such as ignorance and doubt.

It does not increase, and it does not harm, so hatred does not increase either. Because it is peaceful, pride and afflictions are abandoned, and because it is pure, clinging to views and other views, as well as the supreme means of liberation, therefore clinging to it, clinging to vows and asceticism will not increase. Being unconditioned, it cannot serve as a basis for suffering and happiness, so afflictions will not increase. Regarding how it increases through its object, the five views to be abandoned by seeing the truth of suffering and doubt, and the three to be abandoned by seeing the truth of origin, namely wrong view, view of holding views as supreme, and doubt, as well as the ignorance that is associated with these, and the ignorance that is not mixed with other root afflictions, these eleven are called subtle increasing pervasive goers, that is, they take all five categories of what is to be abandoned in their own realm, such as desire, as their object, and they act as the cause of generating them. Of these eleven, except for the two, view of the perishable aggregate and view of the extreme, the remaining nine also take the contaminated of the upper realms as their object, and there is also an object of the vows and asceticism of other lineages. Merely grasping other sentient beings is not a view of the perishable, and it is said that there is no view of the extreme related to it either. The characteristics such as arising that occur together with the pervasive goers are also called pervasive goers. Those that are not pervasive goers do not increase in all cases in the object that has become their own category. In short, view, doubt, and ignorance are pervasive goers and also take the upper realms as their object. The rest are not like that. The two wrong views and two doubts to be abandoned by seeing the path of cessation and the path, as well as the ignorance associated with these two, and the six kinds of unmixed ignorance, take the uncontaminated as their object. In this way, the afflictions that take the upper realms and the uncontaminated as their object will also not increase by taking them as their object, because the upper realms are not what I cling to, and the uncontaminated is their antidote. What increases in terms of association? That is, the mind and mental factors that are associated with afflictions increase in terms of association until the afflictions are abandoned. So, which afflictions are mutually associated with each other, and which are not? Desire does not occur in association with anger and doubt, other than these two.
