And decline, and upward growth, and downward diminution, and finally the kalpa of disease, weapons, and famine, and the kalpa of destruction by fire, water, and wind, and also the complete kalpa, the three-full kalpa, the two-full kalpa, and the four ages of strife, and in terms of the doctrine, the time of fruition, practice, scripture, and mere adherence to signs, these four, and also the kalpa of darkness, the kalpa of lamps, and so forth, one should know that there are various aspects dependent on time. Based on the movement of the sun and moon, three kinds of 'day' are determined: the time it takes for the sun to circle the four continents at the speed of the wind, determined to be sixty hours, is one 'day'; due to its own movement, the period of fifteen phases of the moon's waxing and waning is called a 'lunar day', although there are temporary increases and decreases in length, at the end of the white and black sides, it is actually slightly shorter than the time of a 'day'; the time it takes for the sun to circle each zodiac sign at its own speed, divided into thirty parts, is called a 'zodiac day', which is slightly longer than the time of a 'day'. Based on these three 'days', the seasons of the year are determined: according to the 'day' and 'lunar day', the waxing and waning of the moon are determined, and due to the effect of the 'lunar day' and 'zodiac day', the length of one month and two months is uneven, so there will be an intercalary month. The sun moves through the twelve zodiac signs, so the four continents have four seasons; due to the waxing and waning of the moon, there are white and black sides; due to the wind movement of the earth, the way the sun appears is different, so 'days' are produced. If these are not calculated well, eventually the white and black sides and the four seasons such as spring and summer will be reversed, so it should be determined in detail as in the treatises on astrology. One year has twelve months and three hundred and sixty days. If the time for eating breakfast and dinner each day is counted as two, then there are seven hundred and twenty meals a year. There are also day and night, and one day is also divided into dawn and morning, etc., divided into four periods, six periods, eight periods, and twelve periods. Each month has a white side and a black side, one year has four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, six seasons such as early winter and late winter, and two kinds of north-south movement, etc. These calculable years and kalpas, etc.

All measures of time can be measured by counting from one, ten, one hundred, etc., in tenfold increments up to the immeasurable. Thus, based on the classification of time, one knows that in the past, at such and such an eon, such and such a Buddha appeared, and in the future, at such and such a time and eon, such and such will occur, and in how much time one obtains the self-result from the paths of the Greater and Lesser Vehicles, and what the lifespan of beings is, and so forth. One will also realize that all things are merely a successive series of momentary arising and ceasing. Furthermore, based on the aggregates of sentient beings within, one can establish the times of birth, infancy, youth, maturity, middle age, old age, senility, and death; and for external phenomena, there are the times of seed and sprout, and so forth; and in relation to actions, such as initially generating the mind of enlightenment, accumulating merit in the middle, and finally attaining Buddhahood, and so forth. Most of the classifications of knowable things must be understood by relying on time. The things that appear now are designated as the present time, and based on that, one also thinks of the past and future. That is, In the present situation, most sentient beings are old, most are young, most are being born, and so on, which are different. Depending on which time one is in, those that occurred before that are designated as the past, and those that will occur later are designated as the future. This is merely one's own appearance, and is merely a designation in time, but in reality there is no such thing as time that exists as a substance. Just as various long and short times appear in a dream, some things are designated as past, some as present, and some as future by the power of one's own conceptualization. But in terms of the way things are, no phenomenon has ever ceased in the past, nor is it being born now, nor will it occur in the future; if one realizes the equality of the three times, one is called truly skilled in time. With that in mind, adding the three times and the inconceivable time, it should also be understood that four times are taught. The directions are also known to be merely designated in the same way as time, and the equality of the way things are will be understood. This is the end of the section on time. In order to be skilled in truth, from the point of view of what to accept and reject, four truths are taught: the truth of suffering and the truth of the origin.
