Those who possess any of the faculties (དབང་པོ།) have eight in total, adding themselves to the above seven. For unpleasantness, adding oneself to the above seven also makes eight. For the five factors of faith, etc., adding these five to the above three makes eight. If one possesses the faculty of omniscience (ཀུན་ཤེས།), then one possesses nine uncontaminated (ཟག་མེད།) ones, plus the life force and oneself, making eleven in total. Because it is the basis for wanting to accomplish omniscience (ཀུན་ཤེས།), adding the body and suffering to the above eleven makes thirteen in total. The difference between possessing many and possessing few is: among those without roots of virtue (དགེ་རྩ།), those who possess fewer faculties have eight in total, possessing the body and five sensations, the life force, and the mind. Even a child in the formless realm has three: equanimity, life force, and mind, plus the five factors of faith, etc., making eight in total. For those who possess many, ordinary beings with two identities have nineteen, excluding the three stainless (དྲི་མེད།) ones. Alternatively, know that noble ones with attachment and one identity have nineteen, excluding the latter two stainless ones. End of the section on faculties. Time, which is called three: that which has already experienced both cause and effect is called past time, which has already occurred and ceased. That which has experienced the cause but has not yet experienced the effect is present time. Although the cause exists, the conditions are not yet complete, so the effect cannot be experienced either, and this is called future time. Thus, these three times are nominally designated based on the appearance of cause and effect of phenomena (དངོས་པོ།). To understand the time encompassed by these three times, measuring it by the scale of long and short, it is such and such. If we explain the way in which a series of moments (སྐད་ཅིག) arises sequentially in the manner of past, present, and future, then the edge of time is extremely subtle, with no distinction between earlier and later parts, and this is called the moment of the edge of time. One hundred and twenty moments of the edge of time make one moment. Sixty moments make one instant (ཐང་ཅིག). Thirty instants make one short time (ཡུད་ཙམ།). Thirty short times make one day and night (ཉིན་ཞག). Thirty days and nights make one month, and twelve months make one year. In the treatises on astrology (སྐར་རྩིས།), it is said that one normal inhalation and exhalation of a strong, healthy person in good condition is counted as one breath (དབུགས།). Six breaths make one water measure (ཆུ་སྲང་།). Sixty water measures make one hour (ཆུ་ཚོད།). Sixty hours are explained as one day. Combining these two,

In simpler terms, there are six million, four hundred and eight thousand ultimate instants in a day. There are twenty-one thousand and six hundred breaths. The duration of each breath is three hundred ultimate instants. The duration of each breath is equivalent to five pulse beats of a healthy, ordinary person. One "yoga" is equivalent to two hours, which, according to the water clock, is one hundred and twenty "water measures." One "tangka" is equivalent to the duration of four "water measures." Its instant duration is the time it takes for the pulse to beat twice. Calculated in this way, the duration of each pulse beat is roughly the same as the time it takes to snap one's fingers. If sixty thin slices of meat are stacked together and pierced with a needle, the time it takes for each slice to be pierced should be understood as the measure of an ultimate instant. Because the slices are pierced sequentially, it is impossible to pierce them all at once, so one must infer from the time it takes to pierce each slice. If calculated as sixty-four or sixty-five, it does not agree with the scriptures and should be carefully considered. This instant has two types: the ultimate instant and the instant of completed action. The first is the shortest unit of time mentioned above. The second refers to the entire process from the beginning to the completion of any action, so depending on the action itself, the duration varies. Even the completion of something as short as a finger snap is given this name. Even the time from when the Buddha first generated the mind of enlightenment to when he finally manifested unsurpassed enlightenment can be considered a single instant of completed action. Thus, in order to express the duration of things with time, according to people's desires, sometimes only the time that exists in the present is called the present, everything that happened before is called the past, and what will happen later is called the future, which is the result of analyzing in terms of instants. Sometimes the time from the formation to the destruction of this kalpa is called the present, and what happened before and after is called the past and the future. This is because, depending on the object of expression, the continuity of time can be summarized in the mind, so such terms can also be used. Therefore, relying on the world, a kalpa has four kalpas of formation, abiding, destruction, and emptiness, as well as intermediate kalpas, great kalpas, initial kalpas, and non-initial kalpas.
