Eye consciousness arises in dependence on the eye faculty as its basis, form as its object, manifestation, unobstructed space, and the five mental factors of attention. Similarly, other consciousnesses should be understood by applying the same principle as appropriate. Thus, all phenomena, both external and internal, arise only when their respective causes and conditions are complete. If any condition is lacking, they do not arise. If all conditions are complete, they necessarily arise. This is the nature of dependent origination. From beginningless time, this continuous process has no creator, whether it be a self or a powerful deity. Causes do not think, "These are the fruits I create," nor do fruits think, "I am created by this." Nevertheless, the dependent relationship of cause and effect occurs with five special characteristics. What are they? A sprout does not arise while the seed remains intact; rather, the sprout arises after the seed has ceased. Therefore, it is not permanent. It does not arise from the cessation and discontinuity of the seed; rather, the cessation of the seed and the arising of the sprout occur without interruption, like the rise and fall of a balance scale. Therefore, it is not nihilistic. The seed and the sprout are not the same in terms of their essence and function; therefore, the former does not transfer to the latter. A small seed produces a large fruit; therefore, a small cause can accomplish a great effect. Just as a wheat sprout comes from a wheat seed, and happiness comes from virtue, one should understand that external and internal causes and effects exist in five ways: as lineages or concordances of similar causes and effects. For example: the flame of a lamp, butter, a mirror, and a wall; a flint, a seed, transformation, and sound; the connection of aggregates is also understood by the wise as not transferring. As it is said, so it should be understood. If one understands in this way, one will realize that these phenomena are merely the infallible appearance of dependent origination. They are not born from a self, other, both, or without a cause. They are not made by a creator such as time or a powerful deity. They lack the nature of life, person, creator, self, or phenomena. Knowing that there is no accumulation, dissipation, or inherent existence, one is free from the agitation of clinging to extremes, such as how the self has changed in the past, present, and future. Possessing the patience that prevents future rebirth, such a person will be prophesied by the Buddhas to attain unsurpassed enlightenment. Thus, the twelve links of dependent origination are ignorance not abandoned.

It continuously occurs between (the two). The cause of the past life, namely ignorance and action, leads to the result of the present life, from consciousness to afflictive craving and grasping, accumulating the karma that brings about rebirth, up to existence. From this, in the next life, according to karma, one takes birth in any situation, and thereby experiences the suffering of samsara, such as old age and death, and so on. For that basis that has become like that, for sentient beings with form, it occurs from consciousness to existence; for birth in the formless realm, it occurs from consciousness to existence encompassed by the four aggregates. Wherever one is born, birth and death occur there. Then, again, from the impetus of karma and afflictions, one takes another birth. Thus, like a fire wheel and a water-drawing bucket, one repeatedly revolves and wanders in the three realms of existence. Having generally understood how it continuously occurs like this, if we analyze in how many lives it is completed, as just explained, it is completed in three lives: the past, present, and future. Or, due to the ignorance encompassed by the aggregates of the previous life, and the actions controlled by craving and grasping, one takes birth in the next life, and in that life, from consciousness to existence, and also old age and death occur, so there are also cases where it is completed in two lives. In any case, since one depends on the other and continuously occurs, this is called continuous dependent origination. Furthermore, how are the twelve complete in the instant of completing an action? For example, taking killing as an example, doing it out of not knowing is ignorance. Likewise, that action is action. At that time, consciousness arises. At that time, there are name and form, and the six sense sources, contact, and so on. At that time, one experiences the pleasure and pain of oneself and others, feeling. Doing it out of liking is craving. From this, accepting the part of the next life, the aggregates at the time of doing karma are existence. From this, the part of the present and future arises, that change and cessation is considered as the limb of old age and death, which is instantaneous dependent origination. If we summarize the twelve limbs of continuous dependent origination, then ignorance, action, and consciousness are the projecting limbs. The four from name and form to feeling are the limbs of the projected result. The three of craving, grasping, and existence are the manifesting accomplishment.
