It should be understood as previously explained. This is the chapter on the sense bases. What is dependent origination? These phenomena, encompassed by outer and inner, do not arise without a cause. They do not arise from non-causes, such as self, time, and Ishvara, etc., these permanent agents. Rather, they arise relying on their respective causes and conditions coming together, this is called dependent origination. To speak in this way is the unique tenet of the Buddha, not shared by others. Among these, all outer phenomena, such as the arising of a sprout from a seed, etc., arise through dependent origination. And the inner phenomena, all the aggregates of sentient beings, high, low, and intermediate, arise in the manner of the twelve links of dependent origination. How is this understood? Outer dependent origination is understood through the example of a sprout arising from a seed, etc., with seven related to cause and six related to condition. Those related to cause are: seed, sprout, leaf, stem, tube, heartwood, flower, and fruit. These arise sequentially from the preceding one, spoken of in terms of the proximate cause. Those related to condition are: earth, water, fire, wind, space, and time, these six. In order, they act as support, gathering, ripening, increasing, opening up, and gradually changing. These co-operative conditions assist in the arising of the six from sprout to fruit. In inner dependent origination, those related to cause are the twelve links. What are the twelve links? The sutra says: What is called dependent origination is like this: This being, that arises; this arising, that arises. That is, with ignorance as the condition, actions arise; with actions as the condition, consciousness arises, and so on. Similarly, connect with name and form, the six sense bases, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, becoming, birth, and old age and death. And sorrow, lamentation, suffering, distress, and agitation arise. Thus, this sole great mass of suffering comes into being. Therefore, with the cessation of ignorance, actions cease, and so on; with the cessation of birth, old

As it is said, this great mass of suffering, such as death and sorrow, will cease. Thus, not knowing the truth, and for the aggregates of the three realms, clinging to them as permanent, happiness, self, whole, unique, sentient being, and mine, etc., the ignorance of clinging to them in a reversed manner that does not accord with the nature of things, that is, the imputation that obscures the true meaning, is called ignorance. If there is ignorance of clinging to self, then by its power, the actions created by attachment, hatred, and delusion, that is, meritorious virtuous actions, non-meritorious non-virtuous actions, and immovable actions, etc., arise, and therefore, the seed of existence is planted on consciousness, so it is called formation. Virtuous actions produce the basis and happiness of the heavenly realms, non-virtuous actions produce the basis and suffering of the lower realms, and immovable actions produce the existence of the upper two realms. Formation produces the consciousness that goes to the place of birth in the next life, that is, planting the seed of rebirth on consciousness, it is called the consciousness that can project rebirth; when the conditions gather and lead to the place of birth, it is called the consciousness of the result of projection. Both of these are actually a part of the consciousness that accomplishes rebirth. By the power of consciousness, when conception takes place in the womb, the four, consciousness, feeling, perception, and formation, are name, and the slimy, etc., that are simultaneous with it are form, that is, the limb of name and form, like an arrow shaft mutually dependent, thus the body of existence is fully grasped. From this, the state of name and form is complete, and the six internal sources, such as the eye, arise. From this, the three, object, faculty, and consciousness, gather, and completely cut off the change of the object, that is, the six, such as eye contact, arise, which is the limb of contact. From contact arises the enjoyment of the parts of the three feelings, pleasure, pain, and equanimity, which is the limb of feeling. Based on feeling, desire arises to not be separated from pleasant feeling, fear arises to abandon unpleasant feeling, and equanimity abides in its own nature, and craving arises for the six objects from form to dharma. In short, from the cause of feeling, there arises the tasting of the flavor of the object and rejoicing, etc.

The gathering of objects arising from contact is a branch of craving. This can be divided into three types of craving: desire, form, and formlessness. May craving not be separated from the nature of self, suffering, and happiness. Thus, craving of attachment increases further, and actually engaging with objects to accept them is the branch of grasping. This can be divided into four types: desire grasping, view grasping, ethical discipline and asceticism grasping, and self-assertion grasping. Grasping, through the three doors of body, speech, and mind, manifests the karma that accomplishes future existence, which is the branch of becoming. This can be divided into three realms of existence, etc. By the power of becoming, when conditions gather, the actual first birth, the completion of the body, and the abiding in accordance with one's kind in that place of rebirth is the branch of birth. That becomes the basis for experiencing all kinds of suffering in that support. From that birth arises aging, which is the changing of the continuum of the aggregates, and death, which is the cessation of the continuum, and what they represent: inner grief and sorrow, and the words that arise from them, crying and lamenting, the suffering associated with the five sense consciousnesses, the unpleasantness associated with mental consciousness, and the arising of disturbing emotions that are unpleasant. Thus, in short, this great mass of suffering arises entirely from birth in samsara. That birth also arises from becoming, and so on. Because these earlier branches exist, the term "later branches" arises. Because the earlier branches arise, they cause the later branches to arise. If the earlier branches do not exist or do not arise, then the later branches will not arise or come into being, and therefore the mass of suffering will cease. Regarding conditions and connections, ignorance and other afflictions arise with the help of objects and internal faculties. Karma is also the same. The seven bases of suffering, such as name and form, are: the earth element within, which is solid; the water element, which is liquid; the fire element, which is warm and digests food; the air element, which is breathing; the space element, which is open pores; and the consciousness element. These six elements together act as conditions and cause birth.
