It is unreasonable to say that the ground is truly established. Just as objects appear in illusions, so too do the consciousnesses that perceive those objects. If analyzed, just as the object is not established, neither is the consciousness that perceives it, and self-awareness is not established in the ultimate sense. If consciousness is established through one's own experience, then the object is also established through experience. Just as the imputed is not established, neither are the other-powered mind and mental factors found even when searched for. Just as the temporary consciousness, the seven collections, are not found when analyzed, so too is the alaya not existent. Because the seven collections and so forth are posited as the basis for various appearances, if there are no diverse things, then their basis does not exist either, like a forest that is removed tree by tree. Second, the school of Madhyamaka Svatantrika, through the method of distinguishing all phenomena into two truths, thoroughly refutes the true establishment that exists in phenomena and the elaborations that do not exist in conventional truth. In particular, even the detailed analysis of appearances measured by conventional truth has given rise to two schools, higher and lower, which have deviated from the true meaning of reality, because they are mostly entangled in the web of elaboration. Among these, in the lower Svatantrika, there are two: the establishment of illusion-like reasoning and the difference between appearance and emptiness. The first, teachers like Ocean Cloud and others, hold that all phenomena are not established in their own nature, but exist in both truths as illusion-like. Conventional appearances are unreal, like illusions, and ultimate emptiness, but the appearance of dependent origination is not ceased. Therefore, by accumulating the two accumulations like illusions, one attains the fruit of enlightenment like an illusion, and constantly abides in the nature of illusion, benefiting sentient beings like illusions through illusion-like activities. Therefore, by the power of causes, conditions, and dependent origination, all appearances are like illusions. Illusory appearances are illusions, and in the realm of appearance of wisdom free from illusion, the appearance where elaboration is pacified but clarity is unceasing is also like an illusion. In short, they assert that all of the ground, path, and fruit are like illusions. Upon analyzing this, the ultimate arising and ceasing like illusions, and the fact that illusions cannot withstand analysis, and so forth, do not transcend the web of elaboration, and therefore are not the ultimate intention of the Buddha. Second, teachers like Glorious Hidden One and others hold that nothing is established in the ultimate sense, therefore it is designated as illusion.
