It is impossible to distinguish and not confuse the subject to be proven and the means of proof in a single pervasion. Second, examining the meaning, refuting the entity and the answer. First, in the Compendium it is said: "If the dharma is to be proven, there is no similar dharma; if the subject of dharma is to be proven, the sign is meaningless." Here it says, what is the subject to be proven by the sign? Is it like the dharma of impermanence alone? Or is it like the subject of dharma, sound, alone? It is both. If it is the former, there is no similar example, because impermanence is the property of the subject, and if the subject of dharma, such as sound, is not taken, there is no similar place, so it is impossible to use a pot, etc., as an example. If it is the latter, merely the sound is already established, so it is meaningless to establish a sign for it. Therefore, for the case where dharma and the subject of dharma are independent, because there is no desire to know, it is impossible to establish a sign. If you say that both are to be proven, then it will become a fault of both, because each different dharma must be established separately. That is to say, these outsiders distinguish dharma and the subject of dharma, etc., by the usage of sound and words that are merely the object of negation, and without understanding the point that there is no difference in the self-character, they want to establish the general character, different character, and other character on the self-character of sound, or they want to establish the general character of impermanence, etc., which is different from sound, etc. This is revealing the harm to that intention. If you say that you are not establishing the two separately, but are making the collective meaning the subject to be proven, then even if the collection is the subject to be proven, according to your view, you do not acknowledge the nature of dharma and the subject of dharma that merely relies on the name of the intention to express, but according to the actual usage of words, then the two, dharma and the subject of dharma, must be the subject to be proven that are distinguished from each other. If that is the case, if you establish the sound distinguished by permanence, or the permanence distinguished by sound, then what is the reason for establishing it, what is the example cited, and on that basis, the characteristic of being able to establish cannot be established, because the subject to be proven is not common, so it is impossible to have an example, and the established sign will become a non-common uncertain sign. Second, like this, because it is impossible for the word of the subject to be proven to be established on mutually distinguishing meanings, so when examining the way the sign is established on the subject to be proven, if you want to establish it on the subject of dharma, and you also name one side of the subject to be proven with the name of the subject to be proven, then

If it is said that it is established in this way, then what is the use of the treatises of logicians? Because the nature of the proposition shown there does not need to be completely adhered to in that way, but depending on the occasion, it is said in whatever way is convenient, and the opponent himself is willing to do so. Therefore, the Buddhists say that the valid proof with three characteristics is correct, and the proposition established by it is also correct. The two are different in kind, so they will not be confused with each other. Although the proposition is also a collective meaning, it has already been explained that criticizing others with the method of excluding what does not have the established dharma is not applicable to oneself, and it will continue to be explained later. Third, if it is determined beforehand, it is meaningless; if it is determined afterwards, it is also useless. First, if you also use words like "only" to cut off the unestablished proof, we also use a definite tone to cut off the overly broad scope, then, as it is said in the Sutra of Valid Cognition: "Determining beforehand is meaningless, if it is like another situation, it will not be accepted." As it is said, is it to show that what is to be established itself is the proposition, or is it determined beforehand, or is it to show that what is to be established itself is the proposition, or is it determined afterwards? If it is the former, then even if the tone of certainty is spoken, it is meaningless, because from the tone of directly showing the proof, it can be understood that in the sense of establishing the proof, it is not already established, but is the thing to be established itself. Moreover, in the system of logicians, in the nature of reasons and examples, etc., the meaning of "establishing the established" has been said, which has been covered or is sufficient, so there will be no doubt whether the proof is the established, then what new thing can the tone of certainty cut off? That would become no cutting off. Therefore, if the tone of certainty is spoken beforehand, then it is meaningless for the tone of certainty to only express the nature of the proposition, because it can be understood even if it is not spoken. Then, if it is said that there will be doubt about the unestablished example and reason, how should that be explained? Even if the established is not considered to be the proof, the fault of the unestablished proof becoming the established will not be avoided, and even if it is the proof, it may become the established, therefore, the thing to be established with the boundaries of the three times refers to that.
