Since what is taken is not a valid measure, if the reason for the selflessness of vases etc. is not established from this, then how can it be determined that this is the contradictory side? Therefore, it is impossible to determine whether vases etc. become the similar side or the dissimilar side, so such a reason has no definite aspect of what is to be established. If there is no definite aspect of what is to be established, how can a one-sided pervasion be established? This is just talking casually. If it is certain by reason that the vase is selfless, then that reason should be stated. If Buddhists admit the reason for establishing selflessness by examining one or different, etc., then it is not appropriate to say that the living body has a self. Second, uncertain pervasion, just doubt. There is no proof for the definite pervasion. First, it is very unreasonable for you, a reasonable person, to say that there is no sign of pervasion without a similar side, and this has been refuted. Even if there is no sign of pervasion without absence, what benefit does that have for your own wishes? You yourself want to establish the existence of a self, and you do not want selflessness, so you use life as a reason, and you doubt whether this also pervades from the similar side of having a self? Because the relationship between life and self has not been seen by valid cognition. Because of doubting whether it pervades from that similar side or not, there is also doubt as to whether the sign pervades from the dissimilar side. Since it is not seen as definitely established on the similar side, how can it be definitely established on the dissimilar side? In this way, if it is certain that one of the two aggregates of self and selflessness exists, then it is established that it pervades from the other, but this is not the case here. If there is no such certainty by valid cognition, and the sign is only not seen on the dissimilar side, then since all the dissimilar sides have not actually been seen, there will be doubt as to whether it exists or not in other things that one has not seen or that have not appeared. The reason is that even if all the dissimilar sides have not been seen, there is no certainty by valid cognition that it cannot exist, and one wants to pervade simply because one has not seen the things that appear to oneself.

Even in hardness, it cannot be determined that there is no instance of being impenetrable. For example, we do not see that all hardness is pervaded by being unable to be penetrated by weapons, because we see that wood and stone, etc., can be penetrated by weapons, but it is possible that specific kinds of hardness, such as diamonds, etc., are impenetrable. Secondly, even if we concede that pots, etc., are dissimilar sides, it does not follow that life, etc., will revert from them. If measure does not see any contradiction between the absence of self and the existence of life, etc., then from where will the doubt arise as to whether it reverts or does not revert from the dissimilar side? Because there is no reason to eliminate doubt. If the contradiction with the absence of self is indirect, then in some cases, that sign must be related to the self. And if that self is the result of life, or is determined to be the nature of the same self, what other proof is there besides that? There is none. Because there is no such proof, there will be doubt about saying that life reverts even from the dissimilar side, which is the absence of self. Thirdly, even if we concede that life reverts from the side of the absence of self, that alone will not satisfy your wish, because even if there is no absence of self, it does not follow that the self is established from that. Why is that? Because rationalists do not necessarily consider the absence of reversion to be an entity. For example, rationalists think that even if the sign of life, etc., does not revert in the similar side, they do not consider it to exist in it. Therefore, one direct contradiction can be understood by reversing the other, even if there are no three aggregates in between. But even if this person admits that there is no reversion from the similar side, since reversion and non-reversion are contradictory, if there is no reversion, then two negations can understand the real and infer existence. Just as they think that this is not established, the two negations of no absence of self cannot prove the existence of self, which is entirely due to their own commitment. Secondly, summarizing the points. If the reason, life, only reverts from the dissimilar side and does not revert from the similar side, then its cause must be established as a follower on the similar side. If it is neither a follower nor a revertor, then it means that there is no contradiction or connection with what is to be proven, so that sign cannot prove the absence of self, nor can it prove the presence of self, therefore it is an irrelevant sign.
